Sample kicks problem

I’m having a problem with kick samples on the octatrack. They just don’t seem to have the same weight they do when I play them elsewhere. I’ve also got a lots of 909 goldbaby samples that seem to distort in the top end.

Are other people having these problems? And what sort of things are you doing to make sure your kicks really thud?

I Filter it. Lo-Fi then filter is also nice.

First question - what software are you using to convert the samples before transferring them via USB?

Make sure timestretch is turned off, or it makes kicks sound wackadoodle. Go to attributes in the file menu and turn it off, did that improve it?

TSTR under the playback screen didn’t change the sound at all, for any amount or any setting.

I’m just using the standard goldbaby samples, they haven’t been converted. But they are 24 bit before I put the on the machine, maybe the downsampling is what I’m hearing.

no … this has nothing to do with downsampling since the OT can read 24bit files
but did you look at:
the filter-distortion
overall levels
compressor-level on mastertrack if applicated

Did you turn off timestretch in the attributes page (hold track, press edit/bank) then 4th button under LCD, turn it off there as well to rule it out.

If there is no sample rate conversion then I would look at what the above suggests and make sure that time stretch isn’t happening on a global and per machine basis.

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts as is I get mixed results with some samples, particularly weak kicks.
