Sample chain help

Thank you, just got it downloaded.

What a great community this is … :+1:

Thanks for your efforts, Olaf.

Is it not only 64 slices instead of 128 for the OT?

:+1:

Whoa, thanks for this!

Peter, you are right. There will be more typos and corrections needed. To keep these things updated, I’ll keep a list of files via Dropbox.

Here is the present collection, some of which will require further work but may already now help new Elektron users. I don’t think you experts find much in this but I think these notes can help others starting out with the Elektron machines. I’ll try to maintain these links and correct/update these files over a longer time:

Yeah thanks again, Olaf, very helpful! That’s a bit of work you’ve done!

Olaf’s guides have it all covered. Also, here’s a [blog post I’ve made with a brief overview of sample chains and how they relate to workflow. I’ve used the ACID Sound Pack as an example of how sample chains can be used.

The blog post also features NickD’s sample slice calculator tool, which is a great resource if you use chains of multiple lengths.

Please note that I have merged my notes into one E-book, which is discussed in the following thread: http://www.elektronauts.com/t/how-to-guide-reference-cheat-sheet-tips-tricks/15095 The latest version can always be found [url=“https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8732611/Elektron/ElektronMusicProductionTips.pdf”]HERE. (appr 8 MB pdf file).

all lin ks are dead (because dropbox killed the public folders) - can one reup please?

I have an octatrack and still don’t quite see the use of sample chains.
And what is the difference between sample chains and sample streams?
Thx

I haven’t used chains yet either, but they allow you to squeeze many more samples in your project, and you can select the sample by using the start parameter, which can then be modulated by lfo’s and stuff. The only difference between a chain and the new “stream”, is that every division in the chain is equal length, so that machines like OT or Rytm can select them with the start parameter. In a chain some samples will need silence in the end if they don’t fill the equal length section. A stream can be made from many samples of various lengths which can be defined in DT for example, no silence is required as each section gets its own length so saves a little ram…

So in my workflow in octatrack I don’t use single shot samples only loops that I made myself, is that the main use of chains? Single shots?

Yes, it’s used to have many different short one shots like drum hits. Imagine a string of a bunch of kicks, then a bunch of snares, and whatever, in one sample. You then can load that sample and even though it takes up only one of your sample slots, it has all these sounds in it you can select by using start parameter. Since the start parameter can be plocked and modulated, it opens up other experimental doors…

I’ve been making sample chains recently which has been immensely good. The process to make the chains is very tedious though, and I’ll sometimes make small mistakes leading to samples not being in line with the 120 sample points.

I’ve had a look around but can’t seem to find anything. Does there exist an easy to use application to take a bunch of samples and automatically create chains from them?

Thanks!

I use OctaEdit (obviously), but check out OctaChainer, or any DAW you like.

Thanks Rusty.

I’m reading the page now. Do you know if it can do variable sample chains as well? So using multiple spaces for longer samples and single spaces for short samples so it doesn’t just waste heaps of space.

OctaEdit?

It does anything and everything I want it to

Maybe obvious to you :stuck_out_tongue:
