Rytm vs Octatrack for sample based drums

Hey there, I am an owner of A4 Mk2 and Octatrack Mk2, I am thinking about getting the Rytm mk2 just so I can have the octatrack devoted to all phrase sampling duties and have more creative fun with switching patterns between units etc.

My main concern is: I plan on using samples for the vast majority of drum programming, but the Rytm’s 1GB memory seems like a massive limitation compared to the Octatrack’s compact flash card limit. I love the wave alchemy samples and just them alone in their different variants would be too big to all fit on the Rytm. I like analog drum synthesis too but I really plan on using samples. Almost makes more sense to buy a second octatrack if I don’t plan on going heavy on the analog drum synthesis ?

I’m just really bummed I have a 1GB limit on the rytm storage! Can you have a storage device hooked up 24/7 through USB with samples on it perhaps ? Anyway to circumvent that storage limit ?

Thanks

No and No.

If you’re strictly using drum samples why not get a Digitakt?

same 1GB +Drive limit that the OP is not keen on.

Yeah, that’s true. But in general… why?

I only do sample based drums for the most part. Have a DT and an OTMK2. Figured the OT would be more for phrases and the DT for drums, but I’m really enjoying the OT for drums more. Slicing and scenes is just such a huge creative advantage to me.

Yeah, that’s how I use a few tracks on the OT. I think I’d rather have a second OT than a dedicated drum machine.

Same! Thinking of maybe getting a second OT and letting go of the DT. Not anytime soon. The OT/DT combo doesn’t exactly suck

I had a Rytm and thought I could never live without it but the OT showed my the way.

Back on topic though, if you want external storage maybe the MPC Live? There’s a thread floating around with people praising using it with OT. Apparently you can mount the OT CF card and bounce samples and shit. Seems like a really awesome portable studio option if you get an external battery for your OT. I’m considering it at some point but am watching how the MPC develops for a bit.

I considered an MPC live but I honestly despise touch screens, especially for anything audio related. I just can’t do it. And the reason why I want a rytm over a digitakt is that I actually do want the analog synthesis and also the song modes and a few other features.

Oh okay. I got the impression from the original post you didn’t really need the synth engines. If that was the case you could use the OT song mode to send midi to the DT for that feature. Just a thought.

So I don’t own any of the machines listed in this thread but I will say it seems very bizarre to me that you’re willing to spend upwards of $1500 on a machine that has incredible drum synthesis capabilities only to use it exclusively for sampling… As others have said: Why not a Digitakt? Or a second OT? Is it because you want to complete the gun-metal gray releases? Is that factor alone worth an extra 800 to 1000 bones?

Idk to me this is like asking to buy a guitar and a pitch shifter pedal when you could just buy a bass.

There are other units that JUST do samples too. 404, Volca Sample, Electribe… I have no clue how they integrate into the Elektron workflow (I can tell you 404 integration is probably piss poor) but they’re much cheaper alternatives worth looking into.

I have money, and I like to buy new pretty toys (I already said I do want the drum synthesis capabilities anyways). Small sucker for aesthetics too

but if there are one shot samples only, i guess you could fill all the Tracks on all the patterns and have a different sample p-locked on every single of the 64 Steps, right?

so, i guess: for drum one shots go for the ar, for mangling loops backward and forward, use the ot?

i use the ar and didn’t get too close to the storage Limit. but i also use the dt for all the swishes and swoshes, but even so, it would be enough for me.
