Im using samples from old digital drum machines (DMX, Linn, RX,TR 707…) on the Rytm, no synth engine used. Its Machine Drum better sounding with this kind of samples?. Octatrack do it better than the Rytm in my opinion…
That’s a very subjective question and a matter of taste. I suggest starting by comparing the sample rates of the three devices to get a better idea of why they sound slightly different. Some people prefer 12 bit while others like 16 bit.
Good luck!
I dont have the MD i cant compare this. The 12bits resolution of the MD probably improve the punch of the samples, i dont know…
Octa does it better? Can you elaborate a bit please. Of course the ARs samples are mono, but besides that, I find the ARs sample playback to be really pleasant to the ear. Remember not to use volumes over 100 and keep overdrive off for “linear results” of course…
I’ve only had an OT briefly, but recall the sample engine not sounding that stellar - certainly worse than, say, Akai Z4…
…if it’s all about one shot drum samples…
a mpc might be best choice…
if you don’t use rytms analog drum synthesis at all, i don’t see any need to keep it…
the magic happens with the layering…
a dry linn kik sample TOGETHER with some modulation movement like a fm weep or deep rumble kik hum from the synth models is, what pushes the rytm beyond all the others…
not taking advantage from this, is nothing but a pity…go for it…
the ot can do it all…somehow…but that’s not comparable…and love this sampling engine…
but the best and nothing but a drumsampler is always and remains… a mpc…
rytms sample options are just an useful and sexy add on…no core function…
The sampling-playing sound capabilities of the Machinedrum/UW is not anything special compared to other devices I’ve owned or used. Rytm is more comfortable to use, so for me it wins hands-down (that said, I don’t use the sampling/resampling capabilities of the UW that much, so maybe I’m the wrong guy to talk about this).
After owning a MD for 8 years (upgraded to UW when that came around), I can say that there is a lot you can do by consciously using the internal effects, layering, so on… ultimately there is something lacking, and the headroom and not very good compressor algorithm are important culprits.
I see… The MPC sounds so good with those samples but i sold it time ago. The Rytm sounds amazing but in this case i miss that digital flavour… anyway thx!
