Live set recorded with 2x RYTM and the house DJ mixer at 2am in a Glasgow club basement:
had hoped to be at this: nice one for recording and posting! hope it was a blast, good basement that!
Really awesome live set!!! You were my absolute favorite(!!!) producer back in 2010 when I was DJing a lot, and I used to mix your stuff with tracks from Coin Operated Records… so much wonky rave booty stuff :D:D I loved it! But then I got the producer virus, and now, 15 years later, I can see the sun again from my synth lab
It’s great to see a very similar workflow Right now, I’m using AR with an iPad/Macbook (AR = audio interface) to play whole tracks with synth stuff, and then I use OT for looping and transitions.
But man, your set sounds perfect in terms of mixing, leveling, mastering, dynamics, arrangement, and all that!
Thanks so much for this post!! Do you have any video recordings of your live sets with Analog Rytm?
Best regards, Kai
ah nice one yeah it was wicked night, decent sound system too!
Oh that sounds cool, would like to hear it… What are you using the iPad for? Been thinking about trying one out for music stuff… Thanks for the nice comment btw, don’t think there’s any vids of my Rytm live set online…
Oh man, I found a video of you with Rytm, OT, and a Pioneer mixer, but I think I closed the link on my phone and now I can’t find it anymore, grrrr
So basically, I use the Analog Rytm MK2 as an audio interface for my iPad or Macbook. Then I can use the MIDI Out function of the Rytm pads to create melodies on the Rytm (for example, tracks BT and LT). The MIDI Out signals from these two pads go to two synthesizers on my iPad/MB.
But the monophonic MIDI signals are transmitted to chords, so I use Drambo on the iPad or Bitwig Studio on the MB with a chord generator. Then LT and BT independently trigger two software synthesizers.
The Rytm’s performance macros control typical functions of these synthesizers, such as cutoff, etc., as they can send MIDI CC commands from the Rytm to the iPad or MB. The best part is that you can link these performance pads to the Quick Performance Encoder, and then something magical happens when you play with this encoder and something happens on the Rytm and in the software world at the same time. This is ideal for tension, build-ups, etc.
The audio signal from Drambo or Bitwig is sent to the BT and LT pads on the Rytm (you can set this in the audio routing settings on the Rytm). Then I pan BT and LT to the left and right and disable the internal synths.
This allows me to create melodies on the Rytm, play with the software synth parameters on the Rytm, and layer analog filters and distortion from the Rytm via the plugins.
Here’s my live show from a few weeks ago where I used this setup with Drambo on the iPad. The OT is used for looping and transitions.
Best regards, Kai
Thanks for going into depth here, I never would have thought of using a Rytm this way, as it seems quite limited as MIDI sequencer compared to the digis.
Same, I didn’t know the scenes and perf macros could send midi cc! Need to test this out
Bravo man this is great noise.
great stuff!
