Rytm for singer-songwriters

I finished recording an album last year, and being in the studio was an incredible experience, which also revealed some flaws. Not least of which was my drum machine and rhythm tracks.

I’ve had experience with drum boxes from Roland (new and vintage), MFB, etc., and borrowed an A4 for a couple month. I familiar with synth programming and sound design, and try to blend synths with things from nature (sticks, stones, hoof rattles, animal skin drums).

I’ve decided to step into the Rytm mkii, and use it on my next album. I’m prepared to sit with it for a couple months as if it’s my only instrument. I hope to really step up my game, not only in sound, but in performance, and it’s clear to me the AR is the right machine to harness creativity and originality, but also to be influenced by the machine itself.

The goal: a relentless rhythm— not more than 64 step per song/ 2 patterns at the most— utilizing the analog architecture foremost, fleshing it out with layered samples, and using the VCOs as simple melodic element to hold things together.

My main concern is how best to save and structure my work?

Should I have the album itself be a PROJECT, and proceed from there making KITS? I wouldn’t necessarily need song mode, unless I’m linking two PATTERNS.

I’m grateful for any knowledge you can send my way. Looking forward to learning the Elektron way!

Also, I’d love to see/ hear some examples of what others have done, perhaps showcasing some simplicity and restraint.

Here’s a link to the album, if you’re interested:

I have multiple projects but I ended up having one master project with all my favorite samples/kits. So, imo, save your kits per song and arrange patterns accordingly.

That makes sense! I’ll give that a go when starting out. I just want to avoid as many missteps as possible starting out.

Thanks for the advice!

Someone on this forum had an issues where they saved one kit per project and ended up filling all 127 project folders. It ended up slowing the machine down(?) or long loading times or something like that.

Damn, I’ll look into that. Won’t be able to get the Rytm in front of me for at least another week. Still in the planning phase.

Thanks for the heads up!
