This was the way I used the old eu forum.
For me this was more handy than the new “Forum Activity” function, which is my entry door to the new elektronauts

I was going to make a joke that it’s been about 10 years since I saw so many people talking about RSS feeds, but then I saw the OP was from 2013. Jokes on me! Anyway, I guess I’m going to try and subscribe to myself.

Very late to this party, but just in case anyone is still interested in RSS feeds…
Elektronauts is based on discourse.org, and this software offers RSS feeds in multiple points, not only the main page. Just slap a .rss at the end of the URL and you might be lucky.
For instance, here is the feed for the Syntakt subcategory: https://www.elektronauts.com/c/elektron-gear/syntakt/59.rss (see validator)
Or the News category: https://www.elektronauts.com/c/news/41.rss
Although not many people use RSS feed readers these days, this format is still perfectly valid to have news feeds in websites (if people still make websites, true) and also to trigger events in general. For instance, someone could create automatic posts on other forums or social media based on these feeds.
But yeah, it is a niche feature these days, and this is why Discourse doesn’t make any fuzz about it.
