I used one of the Digitone demo presets as the starting point for a track, where I added drums, additional samples and instruments and turned it into a full arrangement. I have put it on Spotify, Apple Music etc, but have now been second guessing whether those sounds are royalty free and just wanted to make sure I’m not gunna end up in any copyright trouble?
When you say demo presets, I assume that you mean a composed sequence and not just the synth preset.
I can see why you might have some concern. I don’t know that anyone will hit you with a copyright strike or anything like that but I wouldn’t encourage you to do it frequently for a few various reasons.
Basically, unless there’s a clear clause in the user agreement which states that you aren’t allowed to use factory content, then legally I don’t think there’s an issue because you are given access with purchase, however without trying to offend you, it’s fundamentally a little cringe to release a preset arrangement as your own track.
Did not stop Gorillaz from going multi-platinum with this strategy though.
For what it’s worth though, it’s also unlikely that anyone will hear it on spotify and immediately make a connection between your track and the source unless both are very memorable for one reason or another.
Great thanks, yeah it’s the first (and only!) time I plan on doing this. Was just feeling a bit creatively stuck just needed a bit of something to get me going again and ended up being a half decent production. Yeah I’ve checked all the manuals etc there’s nothing in there and it doesn’t resemble the original so much any more so should be good to go!
There’s no harm in it honestly, I’m not criticizing and it’s smart to be wary of potential conflicts that might arise. I think that the likelihood of anyone having been aware of the usage is rather low, but like I said, I do understand the concern.
