Round Robin - new synth from Simon the Magpie

Years ago I used to follow some Swedish eccentric knob twiddler on Youtube called Simon the Magpie, who did interesting things on a zero budget with circuit bent gear. And more recently dabbled in pedal building and the like. He’s suddenly turned up in my timeline with his own synth box which seems heavily influenced by the small cute Chompi type aesthetic (but is something altogether different).

The idea behind it (kind of morphing - or as they say interpolating - between waveforms like the Liven Warps) seems potentially interesting, its got a fairly unique interface with some neat tricks, some of the sounds seem fun (particularly the droning) and the price (£350/$450) isn’t ridiculous.

However, the launch/demo video is more frustrating than informative - feeling more like an attack of ADHD than a proper explainer (although maybe that reflects the slight sense that the Round Robin has been built around every mad idea the creator had, with no editing or throwing stuff away). It’s slightly suprising that someone who in the past has done fairly decent quality product reviews is so bad at explaining and promoting his own gear. But will be interesting to see a bit more of it, nonetheless.

More on the Round Robin. Although could still do with a slightly more focused walkthrough, and a bit more than “join our discord for more info”

I got a hold of one from Simon and have been playing about with it for a bit. It’s pretty cool - reminds me of the simplicity of the Critter & Guitari devices, though it has a bunch of depth too. The arp in particular is a lot of fun and deeper than expected.

Did a video for those curious:

Thanks for that. Really straightforward and informative, and helps make sense of Simon’s slightly less…focused explanations. Tempted to flog my OG OP1 (which hasn’t had much use recently) and order one. The noodle on the sofa factor is much undervalued in an instrument

I really like it mostly as a loop creator. Fiddle about… find some nice sounds. Play about with the arp. Get unexpected results. Tweak. Record… Then mash it in my M8 or DAW or something. Pretty cool.
