Rotterdam Tips

Hey, folks!

I’m going to spend some time (3-4 weeks) in Rotterdam while my girlfriend works there, I have only visited the city once with a friend who lives in Amsterdam, we took the train and spent a nice summer afternoon over there but… That’s all of my experience in the city

I’m looking for tips on places to visit related to arts/electronic music. I enjoy museums but prefer more “local” culture stuff, smaller venues, galleries, etc. Also any kind of synth/music stores with nice people…

Or actually, any tips you have about the city in general, looking forward to spend some time there and escape Stockholm for a little while during winter, haha.

It’s mentioned above, but Clone Records deserves a stand-alone recommendation. It is hard to overstate what this institution and affiliated labels, artists and venues have meant for Electro, Italo Disco and Acid over the last twenty years.

Also a great entry point to figuring out what’s going on in the local underground electronic music scene.

Also: If Legowelt plays live or DJs anywhere in your vicinity, go see him play.

If you go the Clone route you’ll naturally find out that Den Hague and events at the Scheveningen beach front can be pretty happening too.

There’s a great place called Worm that has a venue (I played there a few times) and I think also a studio. lot’s of great stuff hapenning there:

If you like hard electronic music and that you see a PRSPCT event it’s also worth checking out

I can also recommend Worm, an amazing place. I haven’t visited since before the pandemic, but they have a great studio with some incredible synths. They had custody of an ARP 2500 (!), but I believe that’s now moved to Willem Twee Studios in Den Bosch.

Yes, they still have a very nice vintage analog studio though.

I’ll add:

POING CLUB (club)
Arcade, Restaurant & Club - POING Rotterdam (arcade hall, burgers, sushi)
MONO | Rotterdam (bar, club)

The galleries on Witte de With straat.

Retrospective digital art expo at Het Nieuwe Instituut REBOOT. Baanbrekende digitale kunst

Boymans van Beuningen museum’s new accessible depot is very cool: Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen - Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

FYI I just moved to Delft. Admittedly almost a suburb of Rotterdam

I like Rotown, to see (rock) bands. Left of the dial is a great festival. So is Metropolis in the summer.

A Feyenoord-game if you are into football (often with hardcore dj’s before the match)

Eat lots of Asian and Surinam food in the Kruiskade-area near Central Station.

Deliplein in Katendrecht in the summer.

When I was younger, I spend my first paychecks at Velvet recordstore at the Oude Binnenweg.

Correct. I played that beauty in Den Bosch a couple of years ago (birthday present). Mad machine. Willem Twee Studios certainly worth a visit, but I think you can only book in advance.

+1 for Clone Records
For food I keep returning to Warung Mini

If you‘re a sneaker fiend, there‘s a few good places, to. E.g., Woei.

Also noteworthy: the Netherlands are a fairly compact country. You can go from downtown Rotterdam to the beach, e.g., Hoek van Holland in no time using public transport. Also The Hague and Delft are always worth a (short) trip. A little further away, but also high on my personal list is Den Bosch.

Indeed. Public transport in this region is very good.

The nearest historical town centers are Schiedam, Delft, Dordrecht.

Apparently a lot of nederlanders hierzo.

Nope not me.

Yup, I’ve been to the Netherlands quite a few times already, even brought my bike sometimes and went around the triangle Den Haag - Amsterdam - Utrecht mixing trains and biking
