Roto Control (MIDI controller by Melbourne Instruments)

yes I do - in plug in mode… sometimes it works in mix mode - especially when there are more than 8 tracks in use - with a second page its fine - its all curios - and for sure a software issue. greetings from Berlin :v:

If they told you its faulty and to return on warranty then why are you not doing that?

Seems like you want it to not work for you.

yes maybe I use the warranty , but im really sure its a software issue and not a hardware fault. its not all the time. when it was a fault, why it works perfect in plug in mode ? or like I wrote more than one page of tracks no issues in mix mode. Im really sure when I get a new unit… it’s the same problem like now.

does anybody know how to configure the ROTO to have infinite twist knowb behaviour? I’m not in front of it, but I remember to have seen this behaviour in the demo example intalled in the unit itself. I can’t seem to find how to configure it in MAX to do the same …

Looks like a new sharing place for Roto-Control just launched.

Has anyone tried using one of the mappings from that Melbourne Exchange site? There’s a lot of them so it must be working for some people but when I load one using the Roto-Control app on Windows I just get the plug-in name displayed on the unit but nothing else. No names or colours assigned to the knobs or buttons.

i think the mappings depend on the order the controls are exposed to ableton (when you click on configure). they don’t work if this order changes.
this was like this a few months ago at least.
so i think you won’t be really able to use most VST/AU mappings.

Yeah, that’s the thing that’s got me confused. We tried all this months ago and failed, essentially due to the things you said, plus there was a mention of a hash held in the json file? Just trying to understand why M.I. has gone to the effort of making a mapping exchange repository if it plain does not work. I must be missing something, but the one plug-on I own that is on the exchange site flat out doesn’t work

I didn’t, because i have different plugins, but found one for Chroma Console that got me thinking making a midi track on dn2 or dt2 and control fx using plocks. Not specifically roto control :joy:

Idk. Personally, I would have invested this effort to be able go actually choose which of the 64 plugins are actually active on the machine, and/or increase this amount to a reasonable number.

I kind of stopped doing new mappings, because I am afraid that one of my favourites disappears randomly. It is a bit frustrating as a user.

Wonder if the recent firmware hacking craze will spread to the Rotocontrol

From what I can tell, all of these mappings on the exchange are for PLUGIN mode.
EDIT: I take that back, the site lists which mode the Roto should be in to use the mapping.

For what it’s worth, have uploaded one for the free Valhalla Super Massive VST. When you upload a json file, the documentation listing which mappings are on which pages, the colours you’ve chosen etc., is written for you automatically. Pretty cool.

Not firmware hacking but working on a M4L device to allow full control of the Roto directly from Ableton. It can also keep track of your Roto’s onboard template library (for those worried about reaching the limit and losing random templates).

How the communication working ? Directly via serial ?

Yeah, direct via serial is working nicely. I’m basically using this as a replacement for the rack macros (which can’t handle buttons natively). Plus this can also trigger clips, scenes, sends etc.

Nice, I’ve been messing with this as well in the past. Looking forward to it !

Thanks! Just fixing bugs and then will put it out on Github. First release will be single mapped controls only but will then get to work on multi-mapping, snapshots, and patch morphing.

(And yes, for full disclosure it is AI-assisted. I can code and have kludged together a few (bad) M4L devices for my own personal use over the years but I am frankly just not a very good programmer. It will of course be free as I feel that is the only ethical way to release AI-assisted software).

How are you finding the touch sensitivity of the encoders on the Roto Control after the most recent firmware update?

Some of the encoders on my Roto Control need several (hard) taps to register a touch. I have to tap most encoders 4 or 5 times for it to respond. A couple of encoders work as expected.

I opened a support ticket with a video and support told me that this is expected after the latest firmware update - they increased the touch sensitivity threshold to mitigate false touches being registered.

The manual mentions a setting for adjusting sensitivity but this seems to be removed in some firmware update .

Has anyone used a Roto with a modern MPC yet? I‘d be interested in whether it would be possible to have the MPC send value changes to the Roto when switching between tracks or patches so that the Roto knobs will always reflect the actual values. That’s the selling point of it for me, but my impression was that this only works when using it with a DAW. Since the MPC is more like a DAW, it might work like that as well?
