Roto Control (MIDI controller by Melbourne Instruments)

609 CAN$, very acceptable.

They‘d be ideal for Elektrons. Sell a pro version of the digis or Tonverk that’s a bit bigger. Put eight motorized knobs on the extra real estate. Implement a performance mode that can be assigned to these, maybe offer some nice default settings that can be deleted with fct+clear. There’s something to be said about having this stuff built into the machine without having to connect an extra device that doesn’t communicate seamlessly. As great as the Nina is, I‘d prefer having some of these knobs on say my Syntakt.

I hope these keys are cherry keys and clack like a 909. Best in show for me during Namm thus far.

The support for other DAWS question in the NAMM video above sure got quickly sidestepped.
Guess I’ll wait and see if Bitwig support comes. If it does, definitely looking along the lines of the controller I have been wishing for. Wonder if they will come out with a 8 fader “linkable” unit in the same form factor. That would be a killer setup together.

Hum I am not sure if it is half finished. That you need a computer just to change the labels, might be annoying in practice. Especially in a DAWless setup. Also that the motion record length is fixed to n*16 seems to be a bit limited.

I would use it with an ipad, but there the app does not work.

There is hope they will make it more customizable in the future?
Being able to shorten/lengthen MIDI loop length on a step basis is something great on the Bastl MIDI looper. Doubling/dividing loop speed as well.
Would these be difficult to implement on the Roto?

$619 AUD - Very reasonable pricing, just pre-ordered.

Those upcoming updates to the Nina sequencer sound like an A4 killer!

Can you change the labels dynamically with sysex/osc/whatever ?
Crucial for customization, max for live etc…

I bought one. I always found Killamix Mini to be kind of a pain, so Roto-Control is something to try since I liquidated the Killamix. I particularly wish they’d integrate into the Eagan Matrix Editor, where the Killamix Mini integration hasn’t worked well in a long time.

I went to buy some cables (borrrring) at Detroit Modular and noticed the Roto was in stock. Couldn’t resist. I think it’s going to be a nice upgrade to my hybrid setup.

Ok it’s your fault I just bought one. I put in the code DM10 and it worked for 10% off. So I had to buy it.

Bought one also, looking forward to see how it will integrate with Live

Instant buy for me. I bought the MP-Midi Controller last year, but I found it overly complex to setup and a bit too big for my setup. This looks like an amazing amount of control in a small form factor.

Yeah, I’ve used a lot of midi controllers and while I still plan to use the MF Twister, paging around is that one is tough because it’s hard remembering the all the mappings. Or when used in “active device” mode you pretty much need to always look at the screen.

Looking forward to this upgrade.

Oh, it’s already in stock? Excited to see these in the hands of people who can report!

So, if I’m understanding it correctly, you can control for example the cutoff of a synth witb the Roto-control, and whenever you tweak the cutoff knob on the synth itself, the motorized knob of the Roto-control will follow those movements, so it will always be synchronized?

I think it will be setup dependent, still waiting on the manual but on other midi controllers you need some way to get midi back to the device, usb midi makes it easier for sure

So if it is mainly aimed at Ableton Live for the mix and plug in modes, I take it you could flick between these quickly at will?

And the the midi mode the automation recording is stored on the Roto Control itself? So you have a sequence saved on another sequencer that might not be able to record CC movements you could add this alongside?

Sorry, these are basic questions, but I’m deliberately avoiding digging too deep into the specifics of this just yet.
