Roto Control (MIDI controller by Melbourne Instruments)

Still mouse/keyboard is best and fastest option when navigating arrangement view, editing midi or audio. But maybe you can try some mappings.
But navigation/switching tracks is good(will be better once groups can be folded) and navigation for instruments and effects is fast and great. Fast and snappy.
I see it more as extension for Ableton live. Giving vst effects and instruments, racks as well, a physical instrument experience.
And yes controlling mixer page and all that comes with it, mutes, pan, send effects is good also. It needs couple of clicks to jump from one to other, but you get into it fast.
Best thing is motorized knobs that match what’s on the screen at any point for all stuff that is saved on controller.
I would recommend it, i personally love this device

Thank you. It sounds really good.

Say if I select a track in live, the Roto follows immediately to that track, right? And if I want to do something with one of the devices on that track, say the third device, how does it work, you click the device and the Roto focuses on that one or you select it from the Roto itself?

Yes it displays the selected device. Except if you lock it to a device using the lock button.

But it can also be selected from the Roto itself, right?

Yes via SEL for devices in the chain and FUNC for Tracks.

May I ask this question again ?

Yes, roto has touch sensitive knobs, it immediately switch track when you touch corresponding knob in Mix mode.
And then in Plugin mode by pressing and holding Func button you can choose track also and all devices on that track when pressing and holding Sel button to choose plugin.
With single press on Sel button you can turn on/off device of your choice

No, automation is only visible for first page and those 8 knobs. once you switch a track it will show automation of this other track only on first 8 knobs

You have a autocorrect typo somewhere in there I think… either that or you’ve got a different button layout than mine

Thanks bro!

I’m thinking this will be a great pairing to the stream deck in reducing my mouse usage :+1: if only I wasn’t skint right now I’d order it immediately

if anyone here has tried it with bitwig yet - will the physical knobs move when controlled by a modulator?

this device works very nice with rotocontrol. you can click with the mouse on a new parameter (Ableton stock or exposed parameters) and the knob turns directly to the right value. and you can edit it afterward. you can map the enable to the button, and the knob to the knob.

unfortunately it does not work within a vst plugin view, unlike an other device I’ve found (touch me by Elisabeth homeland). but this one has the problem that there is no parameter feedback.

@Honeysmack Any plans/talk of a Decksaver? If lobbying them from the customer side helps, would be happy to.

What are the advantages of the motorised knobs versus an endless encoder with a display to indicate its position?

Interesting- as in the haptic feedback?

Yes, also kinda feels alive because knobs are moving in reaction to software.
Screens also play big role in it. Knowing what is mapped with a glance.
And also internal memory where every vst mappings are saved.
It’s a good combo of useful things for a midi controller in a small package

Thinking about this, would be nice to see some custom mads magnetic covers and caps for personalization

Yeah I would buy those orange keycaps in a second
