I note that the latest versions release notes mention them working on being able to toggle the auto macro behaviour on a per rack basis in future.
Working on? I thought it was already implemented in this fw.
Or now is just for all macros on or off
I was just going by the wording in the release notes:
"Upcoming Firmware Update:
• Ability to turn automatic Macro Mapping on/off per rack/macro. Greater flexibility with automatic macro mapping."
It appears my query has not been addressed, can you control external hardware via USB for bi-directional control?
It says yes in the manual, when connected to my Iridium core via USB host, it sees the ROT but there is nothing in learning mode, it only works on 5 Pin Din MIDI cables.
I need to know quickly as I need to return the item if it does not work.
Plugging in the FaderFox EC4 via USB only to the Iridium Core works fine, still no solution for the ROTO.
Maybe better to write them to their official email address for suggestions
Honeysmack appears to be their ambassador, I assumed that they would be answering q’s in general given that they have done a bunch of videos for MI.
In this instance I think it’s best I just return the ROTO as I have a perfectly functional FaderFox EC4 that does the same exacting thing minus the motorized knobs.
The Iridium Core has 2 layers but only 1 surface controls per layer if you’re wanting to control the engines individually. So in this instance, being able to have access to both layers at the same time is a great way to be able to mangle your sound in real time, the other aspect is the 5 Pin Din failure on my HAPAX with the ROTO is connected.
Oh well problem is now resolved on my end.
Anyone using the roto to control the Roland TR6S or 8S? I loved the ACB kits on the 8S but ended up selling it as there was too much menu diving for me. If this pairs well with these I may consider buying one again, probably a 6S this time.
Off topic but I’m using the EC4 to control my TR-6S which works great, allows most of the fx,tuning, decay knobs all on one group of 16 knobs and I’ve assigned the push button of the encoders to do things like reset fx or tuning values to a default. I’m sure the Roto Control would be a more than capable companion but I might personally get frustrated jumping between pages all the time.
Now if only someone would fully implement a controller template with sysex control of every TR-6S parameter, that would really be something…
well I’ve spent a lot of time complaining about what I wish this thing could do, figure I’d start a discussion on some stuff it can be useful for.
so far this is my favorite use of this controller. Just an EQ 8 rack - knobs 1 and 8 adjust the frequency for a high and low pass filter, by default the bands are off but as you turn the knobs inward they turn on by mapping both the frequency and band on/off buttons to the same macro knob. knobs 2, 3, and 4 are gain, freq, and Q for a “low mid filter”, and 5, 6, and 7 for a “high mid filter” (although I have not limited the frequency range on either just to be more versatile), both with buttons to turn the bands on/off to A/B the cut/boost and buttons to swap between a bell and notch. There’s also buttons for the low/high pass filters to use the 12dB/o or 48dB/o filters. If honeysmack or anybody at Melbourne wants to see why we all wanted to be able to customize racks, this is it. This wouldn’t be possible just mapping the EQ 8 by itself. Even if it was, then this would be the /only/ mapping we could have for an EQ 8 since the “map by name” thing only works on racks. If I wanted to have a different EQ 8 saved in my sidebar for a different purpose, I’d have to ignore the roto-control to interact with it. As it is now I can have as many EQ 8 variants saved as I want all with unique mappings (although that does limit me to just 16 mappings due to ableton’s macro limit of 16 in racks) just by having them saved in racks.
since the “off” value for a button needs to be lower than the “on” value, one neat trick I’ve been doing is swapping the on/off LED colors where on is white and off is black, so you’re not forced to have whatever happens to be the higher value in a dropdown be the “on” setting functionally. Here I want the “bell” as the default filter type for my LMF/HMFs, and when I hit the button to activate the “notch” filter, the LED comes on.
It’s been my dream for a long time to have a nice EQ controller with knobs like an SSL strip or whatever so I can get better at EQing with my ears instead of my eyes. The RockSolid Audio controllers do exist although they’re pretty expensive for one function and always sold out, plus it’s unclear how well they’d work with ableton, but I love how the roto’s knobs tell me an upper/lower limit as opposed to a regular encoder. The limitation of 2 bands + LPF/HPF definitely isn’t /ideal/, If I want to make a third EQ cut I have to add another EQ instance or just do it with my mouse etc, but so far working this way has felt really good. This is a pipe dream but I would love love love a roto-control with more knobs… I don’t love flipping through pages because it feels like some controls are “hidden”. Opening up a compressor and trying to figure out which page the sidechain controls are is actually slower than just clicking it with a mouse, but using racks we’re limited to just 16 controls anyway, so more knobs would be a dream come true.
I mean if we’re really talking dream controllers, a whole ass 8/16 channel mixing console with motorized faders, the roto knobs for pan/sends, and 3 mechanical keys for mute/solo/arm per channel plus some transport and maybe a jog wheel made by Melbourne with solid ableton integration would be an end-game controller for me. There is pretty much no good mixing console controllers for ableton and Melbourne is in a great position to solve that problem if they were so inclined. The roto does seem much more geared towards plugin control though, so I kinda doubt that’s something they’re interested in doing.
Anyway, what cool stuff have ya’ll been doing with this thing?
Love this… and yes we are listening! More from us next week
Ah cool, good thinking there!
Anyone using their roto with an ipad ? If yes, works as expected ?
Is it possible to send midi message when you switch setups/pages ?
As far as I understand only 8 first encoders are automatable on the preset 1 to 16. Is that correct ? Does that mean I can have 8 automated encoders on 16 different presets running their automations at the same time ?
Thank you very much for your replies.
Roto-Control x Bitwig Studio integration now available as a public beta
Nice touch with orange caps for Bitwig users
Instant GAS lol.
Now I want orange caps
Hello everyone! I’ve been following this thread with great interest over the Roto-Control, as it seems to be a brilliant device I’m considering as a potential future purchase eventually.
I got a couple of questions for those of you in live:
How’s the Roto for navigating ableton in arrangement view? I don’t use session view at all, I’m more interested in how this could benefit in large projects with 50 to 100 tracks and multiple groups and multiple devices on each track.
How much mouse/keyboard has it taken away from you?
Thanks!
Can we customize the display and functions from Max/Maxforlive?
Will it support sysex at some point?
Thanks!
