Roland TR-8S

Yeah, if it was alphabetically organized, I could work through it. But since it’s not, I’ll just load the kit folders for brevity.

Even erasing the users samples blows. Gotta go one by one. Just too critical to use.

Plus, it takes away from the ACB and FM stuff.

So I just turned my TR-8S on earlier, and a few minutes later I tried to shut it off, and it won’t power down even though I have switched the switch to the off position. Nothing happens as I wiggle the power button or toggle it from the on position to the off position.

Seems like the switch is failing? Glad it failed in the on position or else I might think there were worse problems with the unit.

Has anyone experienced this before? Anyone know if this is an easy fix (I have no problem soldering) and if so, where I could find a compatible replacement switch?

I’ve never had good experiences with this machine not shutting down properly… worried about how usable this will be until it’s fixed.

Edit: after forcing the machine off by unplugging it, the switch is operating normally. Very strange. Has anyone seen this behavior before?

Didn‘t had this. I guess firmware hickup of a kind you can’t easily reproduce?

The switch is a soft switch so probably just a bug or freeze. It doesn’t actually switch off the power supply like a hard switch, because it needs some time to autosave (if this is turned on in the settings) after turning it off.

Try to slowly cycle the switch, you should clearly hear a click when completely in ON/OFF position. If you hear the click, probably it is not a mechanical issue.
Try to, gently, cycle the switch 30/50 times and/or spray a contact cleaner. There should be some oxidization on the switch contacts.
In the worst case, replacing the switch it’s not an expensive fix. It probably is a simple right angle slide switch.

I think this isn’t going to work. The switch itself is probably OK. It was just a freeze or bug of the software which prevented it to actually turn of after receiving the switch trigger.

It sounds like a freeze. Happens with Roland’s stuff some times. Had this happen to me, and I just unplugged it.

Also happened to my 404. Had to take out the batteries.

I got a TR-8S a few weeks ago and have been quietly adoring it! Amazed by how intuitive and fun it is to compose and perform music. I think my recent interest in DJing has got me thinking about composition differently. This is such a brilliant drum machine, easily the best ever made…

… Though I will quantify this by saying there are many other drum machines that offer wilder, more varied voices. But anyone looking for a ‘first’ drum machine or who wants to perform dance music with a mixture of samples, the classic Roland sounds and edgy FM voices? Look no further!

Yeah, I’ve owned a few other performance drum machines (LXR-02, DrumBrute Impact, TR-06), and the TR-8S is hands-down my favorite, even though the other three are all great in their own ways. I’ve actually been thinking about you @Claid recently, funnily enough, because I started looking into making my own kits, and as soon as I read that you can define accented hits as well, I immediately snapped my head around to deadeye all of my LØSTLVLS packs.

I completely agree with you. Hands down the best. I don’t know if you’re following the thread, but some things to look out for, which absolutely does not diminish my love for the machine is

  1. Lack of microtiming, plenary of workarounds when midi’ed to an Elektronauts box.

  2. Samples are hard to manage and manipulate, plus take away from the deep sound design of the native sound engines.

  3. the tuning is stepped and is very apparent with long release times or faster tempos, with motion control especially.

I’m highlighting them so you won’t get frustrated when you come across these quirks. And actually lend itself to the unique qualities of any machine.

So I posted about this in the 404 thread, but I’m curious if the TR-8S can link with a 404 to layer or replace sounds from the 404, like the TR-8 (predecessor) could. Do any of you happen to know?
Here’s a video of the example of what I’m talking about.

Ive been saying this since I got mine about 6 or 7 years ago. Its a banger. Everything you need, in one box. With easy hands on control and all the processing so you dont need external gear to make it sound banging.

Not to mention second hand prices are low and abundant, compared to most to all other flagship drum machines

I still like having another drum machine or two, but the TR-8s is really so great from sound to versatility to playability

The control surface and sound are great, the functionality is great, but the workflow, asset management, menus, and screen are trash.

I agree - for me this also makes it more a really good a drum machine (when just selecting kits), and less of a groovebox

Well there’s a difference between what you like and trash.

Personally the screen is fine for me. My workflow (if you want to call it that) is just fine.
Asset management, not sure what that means.
Menus, again, there’s short cut buttons for basically everything.

Its no more menu divey than an elektron, if you really analyse it.
