What do you like to assign it to? Decay perhaps?
Decay many times on open hats. Pitch on snares and closed hats. Super slow. Super low and random.
Iâm contemplating whether to pick an used tr8s or not, the only thing that is stopping me from buying one is the midi implementation of this box. Why itâs not possible to control via midi all the parameters of a voice on a digital drum machine?
Sorry for the late reply. But I finally did some more testing about sending program changes:
When sending program changes from my Hapax to my TR-8S, it does stay in sync with the latest firmware! It does cut a tiny bit of the audio of the first step, but it does not lose sync anymore!
It did not make any difference if I added latency compensation to the clock or whatever (which I suspected to be the reason why it worked now).
I tested this from Hapax over USB to my mioXL and then over DIN to my TR-8S as well as directly over DIN to the TR-8S. Both worked fine.
The way I tested is I programmed the first 8 steps of a bar (16 steps) on my Hapax to send as notes to trigger the closed hihat and then I programmed the last 8 steps of the bar on the TR-8S, so they follow eachother up.
I did not measure anything, but it sounded in sync to my ears
If you are curious for some TR8s and Co action, you can check my Short or Live Stream from the weekend on YouTube and follow for more to come.
If this works the same syncâd from Elektron devices I will be so excited, but I havenât been keeping up. Will try to give it a go this week unless anyone else already has (I admittedly also did not catch up on unread replies here).
I think Elektron sends program changes a little bit early (not at the start of the next bar, but a bit before), which will probably make the TR-8S go out of sync. TR-8S changes instantly when it receives a program change, it doesnât wait until the start of the next bar (like Elektron).
With Hapax you can choose both behaviors, which is great.
Ah, okay. The older TR8S firmware works with Elektron, but at 2.03 they changed it.
Just wanted to thank you for this comment⌠I spent a couple minutes trying to find an answer, and this ancient comment saved me.
There is this TR-editor app from Roland where you can program your TR-8s into detail on your computer.
Does this app also include editing of probabilities?
seems so⌠I dont use the editor, but I think you unlock more control using it.
Thank you!
Quick question, as Iâm (re)considering the TR8S mainly as a mainly sample-based drum machine.
How is kit management with sample based kits ?
Is there a way to save kits, with their samples, on a computer, so I can maintain a machine that contains only useful kits ?
Do you think itâs worth it ? (I would love to keep using my AR MK1 for this, but project/kit management with samples is horrible).
it ainât no MPC from what i can tell, in shopping around. but if you plan on managing all your samples on the desktop and importing them into TRS-8 in final form, maybe reasonably painless? though i donât think folks who buy one are doing it for the sample slots. more having all the Roland drums in a single box
Thanks !
I still have the feeling itâs again one of my bad idea that will lead me to order it, get grumpy, and send it back.
I never managed to find a drum machine that satisfies me.
Got to make my own.
I use roland sounds but tbh much more the fm drums. I click my kits with the editor on my computer together.
I never copied one soundfile ever onto my tr8s.
You can import folders of one-shot samples fairly easily. A couple things to consider, though:
1: There really isnât that much storage space on the TR-8S. I think itâs maybe 500mb? It will fill up faster than you think especially if you are wanting to import any kind of longer percussive loops or anything.
2: Since the last update, the file management structure is has been broken. User imported files used to all auto-arrange nicely into alphabetical order, so you could easily scroll and find what you want. Now, they are just tossed willy-nilly into a big unorganized pile, along with all the onboard Roland samples that are already there.
Makes finding your own individual samples a big pain. And for some reason Roland still hasnât fixed this
3: The way to maintain a machine that contains only useful kits, is to save those samples to kits on the unit itself. You donât need to create them on a computer although you can do that, using the TR-Editor and then send those kits over to the TR. But you can also just do it on the machine easily
The Behringer LM Drum thread made me realize I dont need the LM Drum since its sample basedâŚ
Made a vid on how I am loading the card with one shots from not only Samples from Mars (LM1, Lindrum, and the Linn60. Plus some Juno Synths and the Vinyl Drums and Synths) but also the Paragon One Shots Vol 1-3.
This is gonna be a fun performance tool⌠and Im finally fully utilizing what this machine is capable of after owning it for many years!!
I also explain how you cannot load the card on a Mac, you have to use a Windows machine or you will get an import error.
What a horrible experience.
Importing a deleting samples is a horrible experience⌠and even then, you really cannot manipulate the samples in a way to get really super cool sound designâŚ
I say less is WAY MORE, for this function⌠and its for the best⌠I have an MC101, but even then, I wouldnt want to manipulate or use too many samples on that thing, with its wonderful tone engine and partial editingâŚ
And why do any of this when i have an Sp404 mk 2?
So I think i will just keep the Lindrum samples on there in their dedicated kit folders since they are tonally matched, and keep it as a drum machine.
Itâs so strange, Iâve heard this before about not being able to load sample folders from a Mac. But, I have a Mac and I can load the card, and import sample folders to the TR no problems
But regardless, you are correct that itâs not exactly a fun experience haha. I think itâs best to decide right away what samples you are going to want on your TR, bite the bullet and spend some time getting it all done, and then never mess with it again
