I keep hearing people complain about the Roland TR-1000 not being innovative. Iāve been playing with mine everyday since I got one and I think this is such an ignorant thing to say. Let me state some facts:

The TR-1000 allows you to layer actual analog sound generators with other analog ones, FM, ACB, VA, or samples. It has extensive editing features for each layer including filters/EQs, envelopes (or transient designer), various gain stages that allow clipping, insert FX, etc.
Any synth enthusiast who understands at least the basics would immediately realize how vast sound design is with this machine.
I would argue that the expanded 808 and 909 models are actually pretty innovative considering you start from the Roland sweet spot and can go anywhere. Try with the 8x or 9x toms. Can go pretty wild. If you place them on a layer track you can sequence every parameter. I actually find te layer track overkill for the analog drums unless I want to layer them specifically to take as stance of unified compressor and fx. Otherwise, in all tracks mode you get the same tight sync with phase and offset functionality.
I also believe that the signal routing and resampling features are being entirely overlooked. Little things like track rotation, multiple ways to add groove through accent and velocity. Also, using the CH 4000 track compressor and 1176 master comp. Setting the kit to limiter instead of soft clip. Lots of little things like that.
But the sound quality is really something else.
The biggest issue for me is that it will take some time to set up for the fast workflow, given the options available.

Iāve really been enjoying layering 808 sounds with FM generators or samples. On an MPC, this technique is common using samples. The TR-1000 using actual analog generators for the layering adds the dynamic analog element to the sound. It still blows my mind.

Exactly! And itās not just layering itās sequencing them with each having their own sequencer lane. Itās a deep machine thatās being presented as one dimensional, but itās way more than just the sum of its parts.
And then being able to resample, chop, and have that kind of flexibility as well (we can really leverage the analog filter that wayā¦.).
I love the machine. Spent the entire day designing sound, jamming, letting it teach me how to use it. When I feel Iāve got a grip on the scope of the feature, Iāll use the individual outs into my console, and then back into the 1000. Again the sound is amazing.
My guy, if you are into sampling you will love this. In a strange way, I consider the analog drums a bonus. Everything sounds good in the 1000. Reminds my of back in the day when Roland gear just sounded good. Itās got the wide spectral and dynamic range.
Regarding effects: even totally dry, there is depth and space to the sound. There is āglueā. Roland then give you two compression options - clean and character, both at track and master level. To me, they sound really good.
And it has some really useful āutilityā samples as well for transient and such for drums. There is just too much to give an overview. I donāt think weāll really see the potential of the machine for awhile.
Curious. How do I set the tracks to different lengths?

If you can deal with it being the master clock or the limitations when being a slave, I canāt imagine you being anything more than thrilled when playing it.
What the deep dive video needs is more in depth chapter markers. The current chapter markers on Youtube are too coarse, at least for the longer section.
Maybe we can crowd source this together? Like we each volunteer to take one of the current chapters and create pointers to sub-sections.

I got this right: āonlyā 808 and 909 expanded ACBs? No 78 or 606, those only as samples?
No, those are also ACB models with parameters to tweak.
Anyone have both the Behringer RD-9 and Roland TR-1000? To me the RD-9 is a musical instrument for live playing. I like the soft feel of the buttons as well as the scroll feature where you can easily choose the bar to edit. I also really like the note repeat buttons, where you can quickly choose between quarter note, half note, 8th note, & 16th note. Step repeat is fun just to mess around or if youāre trying to queue something up. I absolutely love the RD-9.
How does the TR-1000 compare with those features? I donāt see similarly easily accessible repeat keys, but perhaps theyāre labeled differently or multi-functioned.
I was looking forward to getting the LM-Drum due to a similar layout and 8/12 sampling but now Iām thinking I may hold off. Definitely interested to know how well it holds up as an instrument that you play.
Are there any videos showing the ācircuit bentā CR78 and 606?

Also ā I donāt know how ācircuit bentā those are compared to the extended ranges of the 808x/909x, just that those are indeed ACB gens.
