One true story is that my cousin and uncle actually WERE friends with a guy that worked at Roland in the mid 90s. He was selling his 909 for $250 at the time. I thought that was too high at that time, and decided not to buy it. That was perhaps a mistake.

yeah, even for a VST that’s bogus. the only time I can understand companies doing lockout from license checks is if it’s an active cloud service and you’re using a distributed site license kind of thing with a set number of paid seats available. If I brought my laptop to a cabin to record some music in peace and they pulled that I would lose it.
