Roland SP-404 Mk2 (Part 2)

Put an idea into practice today for my Jamuary thing and it worked great so thought i’d detail it here.

I made a synth pattern on my Analog Keys with a fair bit of modulation and movement and recorded it into Live. Then I removed it from being routed to the output, and sent it from the individual output into my 404 and then back in to the inputs of the AK. I then used that signal sent into one of the tracks on the AK and programmed in a lot of filter movement and some different effects modulation, and then recorded that into Live on a different track. I added some drive and a little extra delay and effects with the 404.

Then with some stereo spreading both signals together made a really nice and complex sound.

Finally sold my SP to reduce my set-up and make place for DTII.

Never took time to record tracks made on SP. So I made this short and minimal one just before packing the SP and for the birthday of my son tomorrow who adores Dune (both novel and movies).

Samples manglings, sequences, FX by SP.
Synths and drums sampled from my DN OG. Voice from an old french Dune audiobook (“I will not know fear because fear kills the mind. Fear is the little death that leads to total obliteration. I will face my fear…”).

I had to resist unpacking the SP and cancel the sale. This SP is so good and alive. It may come back again one day. So special gear. But I had to fund the others for my project.

I saw that video… thats why I reached out to let you know!

Yeah… Im a power user, so i come across real world isssues… and they are not apparent until you try to do something… I still love her though!

I thought you had to play it to the section, and i am cool with that, but you see its beyond that…

I put in a ticket… and Ill tell you what roland said… on both fronts…

Also: here is a vid of me just jamming out with the DJ Delay, which has a looper… its so musical.

Hello Sp-404 community. I just purchased a 404 and I’m extremely excited. Still waiting on the shipping. Quick question will a 64 gb SD card work with this? I seen a video saying it only accepts 32 gb. I buying used so I’m not sure if it’s coming with a card or not and I happen to have a 64 gb lying around. Thanks in advance. :v:

Absolutely, just not for upgrading firmware. It may work, but mine introduced glitches. It’s safer to stay under 32 for FW. And go all the way up to 1 TB. I use 512. And the only thing is that it takes a moment or two for the machine to index the card after a power cycle. So it may seem frozen, but afterwards it’s speedy to import

Ask as many questions as you need, I love trying to help. With any aspect of the 404. And post jams on here too!

I appreciate it and looking forward to joining the 404 fam!

I think it’s still the case that 64Gb cards can’t be used to install firmware updates? Let me know if you find differently. Apart from that you should be fine.

I tried to summarize all the SD related info here:

There is so much to learn. What should I focus on first? Any suggestions?

The basics like sampling and resampling. Also check out @NearTao videos on YouTube. They’re great! Enjoy!

I recommend this playlist. It’s the most sensible video out there in terms of presentation.

Just try to make a song! And as you hit road blocks, ask for suggestions… it will help others watching the thread to learn as well… but also do the research mentioned above, but I think actually trying to make something so you can see the potential and not be overwhelmed by too many tutorials will be better.

Actually, I will be specific. Just try to get some loops imported and tempo synced… a drum loop and a melodic loop.

Then set a tempo of one of the loops, they should be different… then BPM sync one of them to the other.

From there, pick a loop, and press shift and Stop/end and get to the chopping submenu, and try to populate the pads with chops… I recommend filling 2 banks with the chops of those two loops. (a bank for each loop)

Then I would make a pattern with your newly made chops, both live recording a pattern, and using the TR Rec mode.

this will be a great start… from there I would then try some resampling… and that is a great start to applying effects as well…

There is too much to learn in one or 10 sittings, and it can be confusing… I mean. it always is… but remember, in the end, it a finite amount of functionality, and EVERYTHING is in the manual.

@Geneoart

Go step by step, and post your progress… I check the forum repeatedly all day, and there are a bunch of us who LOVE this shit… you should get plenty of help from us

Do you need samples? I have 430 gbs of them…

I appreciate it! I’m good on samples, I usually roll my own but I will definitely be active on here! Nice meeting you. :v: @BLKrbbt

Those are some excellent suggestions. I’ll definitely be sampling from my phone and random sources to get a funky combo. Some found sounds, some loops off my music library and some loops off my drum machine. I’ll throw it all the pot and see what I can cook up. Thanks 🫡

Of course.!

For some reason the playlist is not popping up.

896 5 min videos! If I do 1 hour of video tutorials 3 times a week it will take 6 months to go through it all. :exploding_head: I might write myself a certificate of completion after I reach vid 896. :joy:

There will always be one more. You’re aiming for infinity!

My SP404 mk2 playlist wasn’t linked was it? lol

Honestly, if it was, Geneoart should just skip to whatever topics are interesting rather than trying to watch the whole thing.

My videos for the SP404 mk2 have slowed down a bit… I’d say it’s maybe one every other day now rather than 1 a day at this point

EDIT: What have I done?! simple math of (896x5)/60 suggests that I’ve got nearly 75 hours of content on the SP404 mk2… I’m a horrible horrible person
