Friends, please tell me if there are any good courses on SP 404, preferably on the current firmware?
In principle, I already know my way around the device quite well, there is a lot of text and video information on the Internet. But my learning process now is like putting together a puzzle, where the pieces are often on opposite sides. And I want to combine the knowledge I have already acquired and what I will learn in the future into a system.
I would say watch the videos that Roland puts out that details the firmware updates.
Then of course, you got @NearTao
He has a slew of fun youtube videos called the āin Fiveā series where he breaks down functions in bite size bits.

here in Chicago, there is a huge beat flipping scene based entirely on the 404⦠and we all perform sets using the 404ā¦
You only need one 404⦠and there are so many ways to pull off a dope set⦠not even using dj mode, but just firing off stems, and clips⦠also, just using pattern chaining, and this allows us to focus on performance effectsā¦
but if you want to throw a couple samplers up there, thats cool too⦠trying to beat juggle or something? two 404ās and a mixer? it would be a cool gimmick, but in reality, you only need one.
Now that black friday is over, and i think I just bought 50 gbs of samples, I think its time to do a 404 run, and fill up this thread with 404 only musicā¦
I just ordered a custom stand for my maschine mk 3, so i want to wait till that gets in before i focus on new expansions I bought from Native Instrumentsā¦
@tovia is putting in that work, and that in itself is inspiring⦠so I think Im gonna get to work.
Edit⦠well, fml
Edit: cant make too many posts in a row, so Im going to just add to this oneā¦
How we feel about works in progress?
Now i want to go heavy on this Groove function.
So @Fin25 bought a microphoneā¦
@BLKrbbt aight i made a lil video while finishing tonights tune. i wish youtube didnt force short videos into their short format but we will survive.
this is shaky cam video but it actually represents the fickle nature of this technique pretty well.
gonna try to illuminate each of the knob adjustments
- nothing happens, didnt get the effect i wanted
- i didnt get the effect i wanted, but you can hear the drunken slow tape sound happen a couple moments later, which is a possible outcome of this technique, which i then stop with the next quick adjustments, which i wont count on this list. sometimes when this happens everything slows down super slow and then whips back super fast, can be crazy, feels impossible to control once it starts.
- nothing happens, so i swap to the bus 2 effect for a moment and swap back, which sometimes seems to get the catch weirdness going again
- nothing happens.
- nothing happens.
- finally, i get my intended effect, causing the transition to sound weird and tapey
Been thinking about the possibilities of doing some more work with the 404 Mk2 along with my Analog Keys, especially for dub processing and as a way to send long samples on the 404 through the AKās sequencer and filters.
Make a voice and sequence on the AK, send the individual out as a stereo voice into the inputs of the 404, apply whatever effects you want to it and play any other long samples you might want to layer underneath the sound on the 404, then send the outputs into the input of the AK. Remove the original track from the main output on the AK, then on another track on the AK set the inputs as the oscillators and then have full access to the drive, filters, plocks, lfos and envelopes, etc etc as well as the AKās own effects.
Oh I see! Itās like a secret tape stopper variation.
I tried to see if I could fix the it shorts link, but I gave up.
Cool trick!
Gives me Max Headroom vibes
Why are you holding down the push/enter knob while turning ctrl 3?
the catch parameter is on the 2nd page of the cassette effect, ya gotta hold down enter to stay on the page
can sp404mk2 record midi loops on a pad
thinking like RK008 on each pad
Pattern mode records pad/midi events⦠and it loopsā¦
but nowhere near as complex as what the RK can do.
A drone ambient piece made by recording my alto recorder into the 404 with a little old Zoom recorder someone gave me a while back, and then playing the pads live.
This is nice! Love to hear this type of stuff coming from a SP!
Thanks! Iām looking to do a lot in this direction next year once Iāve moved into a different room with space enough to have a mic setup as a permanent feature.
This weeks SP-Forums Beat Battle Submission. I had the pleasure of hosting, and gave it a love bot spam theme in ode to the bots that have frequented the forum!

EDIT MADE A VIDEO:
I really do need to have a go at doing some hiphop-ish stuff. The problem is I just havenāt listened to much of it, beyond liking MF DOOM and Public Enemyās first few records. I need to study the art some, I think.
Can someone remind me how to record to a pad with a break looping, but not being recorded to the pad.
I donāt want to use the pattern rec because I need the free record. I want to keep playing chops till I get it right. Stop recording, then just pull from the end what I need instead of scrubbing through an entire pattern to find it.
Thanks in advance!
(I think you can pad mute recording to pad and cue in headphones the break without recording to master. )
System settings > pad mute = Master
Then shift + reverse + pad to mute (your break)
Then resample as usual and the break should not be recorded
Ahhh I remember now. Itās the pad mute option. Mstr and phns.
I just had to monitor via headphone jack.
One important step I had to figure out but this works.
Thank you!
I find it easier to manage samples on the computer with my Roland SP 404 MK2.
