Roland SP-404 Mk2 (Part 2)

I also find it very odd that the maximum useful setting on the resonance is 1, 2-3 at most, on a dial that goes to 100!

I had a bug earlier on 4.05. Or maybe it’s me… since I was configuring my old settings after the update.
When engaging any effect the buttons would not light up, but the effect would engage, but it would not bypass when pressing the effect button again. Behavior returned to normal after cycling power.

Got it. Haven’t tested the earlier versions, but I really enjoy the sound of the current one though. You need to be careful with the drive but I like that it can get aggressive

Interesting with the other options, haven’t gotten that far yet

Hey guys! Currently preparing a good ol’ beat set with my SP404mk2… I’ve decided on the 5 fx I want on the direct fx’s, but I’d like to switch what’s under the mfx button. However, I can’t find a way to select the mfx without triggering it instantly…

Edit : I’ll probably put backspin under mfx. Warming up more and more to it, and it has the advantage of being in its ā€œoffā€ state when you load it.

Edit2: BTW, I was thinking about my Bus 3 / 4 fx. Might go for: comp / Isolator. Isolator in 2nd position because it will mostly be here to replace a mixing board EQ and correct the place’s sound / speakers. Don’t want it to alter the comp. But do you guys have nice settings for master compression in a beat set setting?

you may know this already but if you want to have the same settings on an effect each time you open it, change the CTRL parameters on an effect, hold SHIFT + MARK for 3 seconds, it will save those settings as default. that way you could have something always set to completely dry under the MFX if you want to use things other than backspin there

im actually gonna take my own advice here because i forgot the combo and have wanted to make changes to the defaults for a while but just been too lazy!

It works only for the direct fxs, right? I remember ripping my hairs trying to memorize settings for the other mfxs…

you can save the settings for all of the MFX! just made a few adjustments to my own

Crazy ! Gotta try this again !

I also only noticed distortion after the update but I may have just been using it on samples with really low levels

i don’t think it’s a bug/mistake, i think they deliberately added this but it’s not massively useful

It’s probably worth noting that you can only save EFX parameters from Bus 1, despite the pop-up stating ā€˜SAVED EFX PARAM’ if you attempt this from Bus 2.

It’s the EFX parameters that are saved, not the bus parameters, so saved changes will be reflected on both Bus 1 and Bus 2. Just remember to save them from Bus 1.

Caught me out a few times

What the…. I thought it was a bug, saved over and over but every power cycle it disappeared

But it can’t be working as intended?

Trying saving from Bus 1. It’s working for me on v4.05.

(Pretty sure it was working when saving from Bus 1 on v4.04 and v3.02 also, as I’ve definitely done it before. I haven’t been able to get it to work from Bus 2, though.)

Hmm, it still doesn’t work for me. It’s strange because I’m sure it worked before.

I’m still on 3.02 though, I’ll update to and try again

Huh. I’m sure it worked under some conditions on v3.02

You’re definitely holding [SHIFT] + [MARK] on Bus 1 until the ā€˜SAVED EFX PARAM’ pop-up is displayed? It’s quite a wait.

I had a hunch that it didn’t work on the MFX slot previously, but I could be wrong.

Yes I did, got the confirm status on bus 1

Ah, OK. I guess there could be some other factor at play, but it’s probably easiest to try it on v4.05 if you’re happy to upgrade. (Remember to perform a factory reset if you do.)

If it’s still not working after upgrading to v4.05, I’d be curious to compare a few settings. There could be a bug that’s only apparent with particular settings.

Yes I was planning to do so anyway!
But why do I need to factory reset? To avoid bugs?

Do you know if it’s still backwards compatible with a project from the older firmware?

i just tested.

saving the fx params on bus 1 makes the default change on both buses

saving the fx params on bus 2 said it saved but reverted back to the default i had saved on bus 1. maybe a bug? idk, im on 4.05

and just for the record, i did not do a system restore and the updates worked fine, but they do officially recommend it!

The factory reset is a step in the upgrade procedure, so I did it to avoid any potential issues. Just the system data, though – you don’t have to wipe everything.

I haven’t tried rolling back, but I think someone above said it gave them some problems.
