Roland SP-404 Mk2 (Part 2)

Hitting a freshly recorded pad followed by hold is hard wired for me.

also had an SP404 day…played some Kalimba into it via a contact mic, mangled it into oblivion, then played some guitar into it and mangled that into something atmospheric…such a cool device, it’s also one of those devices that shines when using it on its own.

I had it playing through my Spark Mini, works excellent as a speaker because battery driven with aux in (which circumvents the amp/gain stage)

Fixed measure sampling and the looper were my go tos today, in particular the fixed measure sampling is a dream come true and expands the use cases for the SP404 significantly.

For people using the SP as a midi controller in your DAW, what are your settings? I looked in the manual and didn’t see a local control on/off setting to disable the SP from triggering the samples assigned to those pads on the SP, but maybe Roland calls it something else or I’m not using the right term. Also, I see there are a couple of midi note modes.

C’mon 808!!

It’s related to pitch settings! If pitch is set higher than 0, the pad will stop after some time. If 0 or pitched down, the pad does not stop.

None of the different gate settings, loop on/off, reverse on/off, pingpong, bpm sync, etc fixes this issue.

Tested with a 16 minute recording of rain.

kind of question is that, definitely not mutually exclusive, whatever it is a new sp-555 or 808 would be noiiiice!

hope they listen better than they did with the MX-1 performance mixer, sheesh I have two of them and all we asked for was class compliancy

Probably a hardware limitation of that generation.

Hopefully they can make the pads light up brighter without the LEDs burning out. Outside visibility is a problem for most devices - few LEDs can compete with the sun!

One thing that may help is a sun hood. They make them for tablets/iPads (and their displays are much brighter than 404 pads): Amazon.com : tablet sun hood

A question: is there a way to transpose patterns (shift the notes=pads they play up or down)?
Is there a way (forum topic?) to submit feature requests such as this one?
Much obliged.

Huh… I guess when I read through the comments I just assumed the ā€œYes Pleaseā€ was to somebody else… URL dump in 5… 4… 3…

The Buy Me A Coffee shop was setup with some downloadable items listed. I can set the prices as low as $1 (maybe even $0) which is nice, though file upload limits are annoying. I’ve put together some sound sets and things, and most of the descriptions have links to go to if you want to download some (or in some cases all) of the content for free. I’m mostly putting these sound sets here as a place to aggregate some of the things I’ve done over the years that might start to get harder to find. I’m also paying for probably too many hosting services and will at some point try and collapse down to a smaller number of systems.

One of the services I pay for… Wordpress. It’s not unbelievably pricey, but is really just a place I generally just upload files to lately instead of blogging. The link goes to the latest ā€œfreely availableā€ guide, it covers version 3.x. People from time to time reach out and ask how to support me, and I’ve settled on publishing interim ā€œincompleteā€ or ā€œminor updateā€ versions of the guide to my Patreon for subscribers only… I am in the process of updating the guide to firmware 4.04… but subscribers can get the minor updates as they happen…

The Patreon link should take you directly to the freely available quick reference. It’s pretty easy for most people to print out and make themselves, and I’ve posted a YouTube video on how to do it. There is a link for a paid version over at BuyMeACoffee, which exists entirely outside of Patreon because as far as I can tell, there isn’t a good way to ask a questionnaire for things like shipping address. I’m charging $10 to make the quick reference by hand and ship it out. On Patreon there isn’t really a good way to charge ā€œless than $5ā€ for most anything… and it looks like a hassle to have custom forms when people buy something… between Patreon and BuyMeACoffee I feel like I can get most of the ā€œlow costā€ and ā€œhassle freeā€ and heck even ā€œgive stuff away for freeā€, but neither has proven to be a one stop shop for what I am trying to do… which is mostly get information out there, and let people pay what they want, if anything.

My YouTube channel is where you’ll probably find the most consistent updates. I seem to get the most questions and things here, and I have in the past tried to stick to posting at least one video a day. It has gotten a bit harder to keep up, and I’m just getting around to posting videos on the 4.04 firmware update, but it’s still going along.

I’ve got a discord server going as well… pretty sleepy, though from time to time questions get asked or I’ll make some time to hop onto voice chat and answer questions. Honestly, it’s mostly used as a table top rpg server for a few games I run with some friends, but I’m always happy to hang out with anybody if I’ve got the time.

Beyond that… probably far more information than you were looking for… but figured I’d dump all the ā€œwhy does this person have stuff all over the placeā€ information along with what I think are the important links for what you’re looking for.

Hi

Is it possible to send the sound of my MC-101 in the USB of the SP and use its audio inputs & outputs as a FX send/return with a FX pedal (MS70-CDR) plugged in ?

Not really, but sort of yes.

The problem is that you only have 2 outputs, left and right. There are technically 4 outputs, but the main outs are mirrored to the cue outs (the headphone jack), so you get duplicated signals.

What you could do, if you’re willing to have a mono output, would be to hook your MC-101 into just the left input, then take your left output on the SP404 mk2 and connect it to the input of the guitar pedal. The guitar pedal out would connect to the right input on the SP404 mk2, and then you’d take the SP404 mk2’s right output and connect it to your main output.

I did a video on this a long time ago, and it does work… but of note, it’s very easy to make feedback loops, so you’ll want to test things out with very low output volumes, and always be careful of any changes that could create a feedback loop. Several of the SP404 mk2’s effects will pan the audio signal, for example there are some delays that I have noticed will send audio from one side (left or right) and then play it on both left and right channels.

If you’re going to do this, take your time, be patient, and be careful.

Good luck!

Great answer and advices !!! Thanks a lot.

This comes up often enough as a question I should keep the link on hand or something… but this should explain what you’re looking to do https://youtu.be/AHMiKeYo2C8

Or I should redo the video… I think that’s one of the older, more terrible audio quality videos.

No problem. The information is in the video. Thank you.

SP-404 MkII app | how to hear the preview?

I’m using the SP-404 MkII app to load up some samples to my SP-404 MkII.

There’s a preview button in the app, but when I press it, I don’t hear anything.

What am I missing?
