Roland SP-404 Mk2 (Part 1)

After trying out the looper, OT is still king.

It is a great looper for capturing, but cross fading between input and loop is not implemented very well.

So at home it’s great, on stage I’ll stick to OT.

Losers like me who are a days work and 3 hours drive from their SP’s have to experience life through others…

A big one behaving as a small one regarding the SP. It’s like a micro-company in the company. It’s so good.

When you set the feedback to 0%, the recorded phrase will disappear after playing once. This is similar to the feedback param of a delay effect.

Oh man I made sure last night that I did those updates to bring it to work. It does look like some great new features.

How are people using their SP’s at work when they are working?

I’m confusion

Aha! Thank you very much!

UPDATE
Do not use a 512GB card for your update! I used an 8GB card, and it got updated.

Whoa! What’s happening? I can’t update my SP to v4.04. It just says “No Updater”. I have both the APP1 and APP0 in my SD card root. Help!!!

hmmm It was kind of the same for me, but after a while it found the updater.
But my unit keeps crashing over and over, so I think somethink went wrong with my update.

The Nonjuror vid is really good. I agree with him that the sine wave sounds super nice. Good tips in there for getting your levels right for loops as well. Definitely a good idea to avoid having everything on full volume. I need to mess around more with recording loops on the ”Ext” setting and running a pattern in the background to play over. It would be good to get loops of just the instruments to be able to adjust levels later, and also have them for stems for the DAW.

I wonder if Roland could overcome the 16s max record in free mode or if that’s bumping up against some kind of limit.

Sounds like something went wrong maybe. I haven’t had any crashes and tried loads of different stuff, and played around for probably two hours total.

You kept that No Updater screen on for a while? I’ve been keeping it on for nearly 10 mins and … nada!

Aha, no far from it. I just saw the no updater file for like … ten seconds ish and found it weird, but suddenly it started to update

Oh wow in Taetro vid he shows in looper mode you can save the loop to a pad, then overdub and then save that to another pad etc. Amazing.

Ok I have spent more time with the looper and I might not use any other mode again. You just bang on something in free mode, copy to a pad, layer more stuff, copy to a pad and in 15 minutes you have enough for a decent beat…

Exactly!!! In a way it shortcuts the resampling workflow, at least for composition. I didn‘t know I wanted a looper on the SP404 but the implementation is very good and its currently my fav new feature…that and pad mixdown :ok_hand:t3:

For those having issues updating. Make sure the SD card is 32gb(I think) or below. Had issues last update till I used an old 4GB SD card.

Awesome! Yeah I can’t wait to try the looper now!

I wonder why they didn’t allow for an 8 bar loop? You could certainly fit that into 16sec

Probably memory issue, and the probably tested it out and had issues. Regardless, not a big deal when I can just chain stuff up.
