Roland SP-404 Mk2 (Part 1)

i appreciate how often you come to this thread with a solution focused mindset, keepin it real out here. many thanks kegz

breakout box is a great solution, using your noodle!

Thanks. Yeah I mean I’ll basically just have to kill the output when using a mic into it then mute the mic again, but it’s not a good solution at all and really they just need to add a simple option for output monitoring. FWIW I’ve sent them an email about it, maybe if more ask them we could get it in the next firmware update.

i think about it kind of like this.

if there is a car in a crosswalk, a crossing pedestrian has two choices. they can either make a dramatic stink about the car being in the crosswalk, or they can walk around the car.

find ways to walk around the car

No stinky drama here mate. I asked about it and it’s apparently “already on the table” for potential inclusion in a future update, and the support person I talked to also would love to see it’s inclusion so here’s hoping. There’s no guarantee of course. Until then I’ll manage my way around it as we all do in general, never hurts to give feedback and be part of the solution though.

i wasnt implying you were making dramatic stink that was just the metaphor. glad to hear they got back to you, in the meantime, time to find that workaround.

One thing I find weird about this machine is how pressing Resample gives you a metronome immediately that bears absolutely no resemblence to the timing of you later starting the recording. It’s really annoying, as effectively in order to use end snap with Resampling, you have to start recording exactly on the metronome beat otherwise you have no hope with the timing. Why doesn’t the metronome either only start by default when you actually begin resampling, OR give you the option to have it playing beforehand and then snap to the recording timing when you begin resampling (as I can see how being aware of the BPM beforehand is useful)? Or, alternatively, give you a fixed count-in? The way it works at the moment is maddening, unless I’m missing something obvious!

Here’s the breakout box(if that’s what it’s called) build in case anyone is interested. Works awesome to a. disable monitors quick for sampling via mic and b. Keep the monitors connected and just unplugging the SP and/or DN.

This one is 3 stereo 1/4 jacks, toggle switch, and an enclosure. Forgive my soldering, it’s bush league at best!

more tunes

remembered that i have more success when i actually intentionally choose a key from the get go instead of letting a sample decide. all synth stuff is from the soundcanvas

LOVE this thing, the perfect sampler/multitool feature-wise. And the speed, god damn, so effective with muscle memory established. The whole box just keeps getting better the more I use it. My friends Electribe 2 and the current "MPC"s feels like they are made for children in comparison.

I wonder though; with the emphasis on cusomizing the visuals and lack of monetizable (?) soft-/firmware, if Roland could make this box even more legendary by making the firmware open source or whatever. Just a thought, I don’t care about chunky knobs but it would be cool if there were even more stuff to adjust and forget inside the settings menu to customize workflows too.

I agree with these three (minor) annoyances though:

  1. A bit cumbersome to get perfect loops, still don’t get consistent results using end snap. Will revisit the manual and give it another, last go.

  2. I also feel like i’m pressing exit alot, can’t think of any specifics so this is minor. Why couldn’t any other button just do the exit function when needed instead of telling me to do it? The “you need to press exit”-message shouldn’t really exist imho, just do.

  3. Snap to zero cross-point should be on by default, with the ability to change it in settings.

What is the best way of reaching Roland for feedback, the same as their (very responsive btw) support?

Yeah use their product support - https://www.roland.com/backstage/support#product_support

Yeah, also forgot to mention an idea; if during recording stop/end snap could be assignable to any of the buttons to the right of the grid, maybe Ext. source, since the rec-buttons are tiny and hard to hit with good timing.

got an s-1 again, feeling back in my zone. this one feels different then my other recent output so thats a fun reminder for myself that im not just making the same thing over and over

My value encoder is skipping a lot ever since i got the unit. Have been trying to ignore it, but its getting annoying. Anyone else experiencing this?

value encoder is solid for now here but i am worried about it, seems flimsy.

anyone else think getting the dry signal with 0-100 mix on the input fx pitch shifter?
think it’s a bug?

same with harmoniser, not sure if by design, but my sp505 has 100%wet option.

i cant figure out the pitch shifter for the life of me, but i havent noticed that. ill take a look

so i only got the dry signal at 0-100 when all the other values were at 0 and CHROMATIC, but changing any of them changes my 0-100 signal

Anyone have a stage stand recommendation for the SP? I’ve been looking at laptop stands that might work…basically I’ve got a synth on a standard keyboard stand and hoping to have another stand off to the side that has the SP at about the same height (or higher) and angled towards me.

Maybe try a heavy duty sheet music stand? We have one at home my wife can put a laptop on so would easily hold an SP. or two :grinning:

I have one I used for my MPC Live, worked great minus some wiggle hitting pads. I’m gonna have to dig it out again. Thanks!
