Roland SP-404 Mk2 (Part 1)

Sounds to me like you are over thinking it. Just record your stereo mix out of the SP to your DAW and chop it up in post. Or, if you need ultimate flexibility in post, maybe use your Syntakt to trigger samples in your DAW?

Also, it boggles my mind trying to think how the SP would be able to multitask over USB. Which track would get recorded with effects? Like the Syntakt, it would probably come in on a seperate FX track? At which point, you’d still have to chop up a single stereo file.

Or, just get a Digitakt and try not to get bogged down by its limitations.

Not sure if anyone’s interested in this but on the off chance I thought I’d share. Maybe it’s common knowledge. New to me anyway

It’s actually pretty simple to route audio out of a MacBook into the 404, process the audio and hear it back through the MacBook speakers/record it back in in real time without needing an external sound card over USB-C. Perfect for couch dwelling music makers that want to combine a DAW with the 404 whilst kicking back.

You just have to setup an Aggregate Device in Audio Midi Setup, select the Aggregate device in your DAWs ins/out, sort out the ins/outs config and route the stuff on the track channel - making sure Ext Source is on on the 404 of course.

I definitely am over thinking just about everything. :joy: With a 404, I’d definitely do something like that in the DAW. Or do multiple recordings etc. Not as authentic to the live jam, but for my sample purposes, not really a huge deal.

Yeah, I just did. I would have loved stereo sampling and more effects, but the workflow can’t be beat. Will most likely end up trying a 404 this year too though.

Thanks very much @PlumWrinkles, @Kegeratorz, and @BLKrbbt! I really appreciate the comments!

It’s the SP303 compressor and cassette sim stacked and resampled, and then stacked and resampled a second time with different parameters. I also dropped the speed/pitch of the sample just a hair the first time I resampled.

I’d like to do more video and motion graphics projects this year. I read a book on Motion a couple of years ago, but found it really tough, so never ended up using it and I’m still learning the basics of Final Cut. Very slow going at the moment, but I enjoy messing with them quite a bit, so I think diving deeper into that stuff would encourage me to make more music.

If you get a chance could you PM me how you got the video glitched up like old vhs, or point me to the resources?

Im taking Digital Media at Chicago City Colleges, and I’d love to recreate what you did for my class.

I can make the graphics and animate them in Adobe Illustrator and Animate, but haven’t done effects yet.

I appreciate it!

Sure. Will do later today. I’m a total noob and just layered and tweaked a bunch of stock effects in Final Cut. I haven’t tried any 3rd party plugins. I’m sure there must be an easier way than what I did. Haha. (I literally had to Google to find the effects in FCP :joy:)

Dope. Just a quick point in the right direction. It’s not for anything coming up, but might be good to have as backup.

I really appreciate it!

Does anyone use a Birdcord cable with their mk2? If so, which cable did you buy? I’m a little confused on the dc power voltage of the 404

For the SP-404 MKII you need this one, is really high quality :

Is there any reason to use this rather than just powering it off of USB?

I don’t know, I don’t use it. Just answering his question.

My use case was to simply be portable without batteries but also still use the USB c port for sampling audio and not drawing power

I.e. I can plug my phone in via USB to sample without drawing my phone battery to power the sp

I’ve had a bunch of issues with usb power. My powerbank and usb-c cable meet all of the requirements but I’ve also had it randomly shut off on me after days of working fine. I think dc power might be the safer bet. Also, I already have a birdcord for my digitakt and it’s very reliable.

Hey all, can the SP-404 MK2 do round robin yet?

Well, the SX can, so it’d be pretty sad if the Mk2 couldn’t…

Wait, did you just change your question, or am I losing my mind?

I’m sure I was answering a question about stereo samples…

I don’t have an answer about round robin behaviour.

Cheers!

Sorry, I removed the question about stereo, but left the question about round robin. Which one did you answer?

As far as I know, the mk2 cannot do round robin samples at this time.

The SP isn’t currently setup to allow multiple samples per pad (layers), like you can do with an MPC, so they would probably need to add that first for RR to work well, I think. I suppose they could use the group function, but you would end up with samples spread out across the pads, which isn’t as elegant.

That said, I do cheat it by putting multiple versions of the same snare and kick drum over a few pads to avoid the machine gun effect, and it works pretty well. Thankfully you have loads of memory and pads/banks, so you’ve got a bit of room to do this kind of thing unlike with something like the Digitakt.
