Brilliant!
Next, I wonder if the SP would run the actual game…

How’re people getting on with 2.0? I had my first crash yesterday in a having to pull the power cable out style. Not sure what caused it, but a pattern was running.
Things I’m liking… not a delete all, but appreciating being able to delete notes in the TR mode as opposed to the hold the note down delete style of old. Much quicker and more precise. Also I’m sure there was a bug where the bus 1 and 2 effects would deactivate when recording a pattern and that seems fixed now. Being able to jump in and out of pattern recording and normal/TR mode without stopping the pattern is great, it makes things much more fluid. Haven’t used it extensively but the variphrase is sounding decent on a few things I’ve tried it on. Snap to zero crossing is sweet.
Not so much… I can’t get my head fully around the TR mode sequencer. Lack of experience using one probably partly to play but didn’t have quite the same struggle with the Pioneer SP 16 one, can’t pinpoint why I’m struggling. It feels clunky and unintuitive. Great it’s there all the same. I really hope in a future update they make everything adjustable on holding a pad. It would be so good to say play something in un-quantised then switch to TR mode and see and then edit the start point of individual notes.
And in true SP style, while making some changes to a previous Elektronauts beat battle track I’d been planning on tweaking I took it in a completely different direction thanks to good old SP effects, resampling etc Thought I’d share
@looms pretty cool track!
Yo Nauts, a question: I’ve tried the “remain” + FX combo to keep the fx screen locked aaaand… looks like it doesn’t work while in pattern mode, right? I’m still on 1.14 firmware right now…
You should run the update it’s super easy
So the 404 I ordered from Guitar Center is moving and has a delivery date. Guitar center never told me it shipped and with the shortages I didn’t expect to actually get one this easily but I did remember seeing posts from either here or Reddit of people saying guitar center had them. Are people still waiting for theirs? I see most shops are taking preorders but it’ll be crazy if I really just get it in less than a week.
Hope it arrives for you. It’s a joy to use and should pair nicely with your OP-1f
got mine 2 days after ordering. order at small shops not the big ones (thomann and so on) . worked for me.
Yup, but alas, no sd card available at La Casa Kuro right now…
I also have an SP-16 and find it’s TR style sequencer much more intuitive. While the addition of the TR sequencer (and other goodies) to the 404 MKII is much appreciated in 2.0, I find the fact that it is constantly playing while editing to be somewhat annoying when building up patterns. There is no way to stop it, add your kicks or whatever, play it back, stop again and edit accordingly to my knowledge. That’s how I prefer to use TR style sequencers and how all other ones I’ve used operate. Less of an issue but something I’m meh on is having to set up the pad settings (velocity, offset etc) beforehand as opposed to tweaking after the fact. I think that coupled with the pattern constantly playing while editing it make for a clunky experience.
If I didn’t have an SP-16 to compare it to maybe I wouldn’t have these gripes, but that sequencer is so damn fast and easy to use that it’s hard not to compare the two.
Good to know I’m not alone!
@jemmons posted above that you can pause the playing in TR mode and then input steps in blissful silence which is handy: Roland SP-404 Mk2 - #5032 by jemmons
Definitely with you on having to set the pad before you input the step being a wonky way of working. Hopefully they’ll update this in the future. Roland really seem to have their eyes out on feedback so fingers crossed.
I think for me coming from using piano rolls in DAWs I’m used to working sequences left to right which the SP-16 sort of does with the horizontal steps along the bottom, so the 404 top left to bottom right flow is kinda messing with my brain. Hopefully it’ll start gelling with more use. I feel like I’m a play it in live person ultimately so maybe I don’t really need the TR mode for inputting notes anyway
Oh wow thanks for that, I didn’t realize it was possible. I guess that leads to another minor gripe that I forgot to include which is the crazy number of button combinations you now have to memorize. There was already a fair amount, but 2.0 definitely up the ante for ones you have to memorize because they aren’t labeled or overtly obvious.
Part of me feels like if they had waited to release the unit this summer we might have had dedicated buttons or labeling for the 2.0 features. Could have given them a chance to build up stock too with the supply chain shortages and shortens the wait time for it.
But it also gives them the change to make a “pro” version. Maybe the return of the SP-808? Lol.
I can see it now. SP-808 MKII: double the fx, double the features, double the wait time, half the screen size
double the zip drive error’s … jk
fun fact, you can install the sp-808 Emix studio on the 808, and also the edirol A6-multitrack version on a regular 808 as well
I’ve been down in SoCal for about a week now, and the beauty and light i experience here, truly moves my soul…but when the music materializes from my heart, there is a bit of the bitter sweet in it. I guess it’s the nature of being an introvert and relates to how i process information and emotions and thoughts.
Anyhoo, just wanted to share another track of the many i’ve posted here. It’s a little dark courtesy of Mister Huxley, but he seemed to anchor the whole track once i found the right VoiceOver to add.
You have to love the internet because of these serendipitous moments they seem to materialize when your thoughts go in a specific direction. As Uncle Ben said, use this Power for Good.
Thanks for listening as always:
One of my pads (pad 14) is starting to malfunction. Not sure what is going on exactly but what I’ve noticed so far is that while a sample is in gate mode it the sound continues playing after I release the pad. Anyone else have this? I’m hesitant to use the warranty to get it fixed or replaced as who knows how long that would take. I’m wondering if there are others with a similar issue and if there are any diy fixes.
