Roland Sh-4d

That one may be very hard cause the physical interface only has a LP,BP,HP selector.

I know I thought about that.
There’s always the shift button.
Or some menu for enabling ā€œvintage modeā€ or JP-8 mode etc

Nice surprise. Generic driver, system effect mode makes me consider this again. I wish they would add generic driver (possibly with audio too) and substep to TR-8s.

I just tested this and neither the release of the sound or the FX tails get cut off now when changing patterns :sunglasses:

I used to tell people not to treat the SH-4d as a groovebox, but instead think of it as a multi-timbral synth. However, after having had a play around with the v2 update, I would say the SH-4d now fully qualifies as a groovebox.

Hmm, seems like nothing gets cut when manually changing patterns, but when you enable pattern chaining the sound (with long release) does gets cut off when it moves to the next pattern even when using the same sound, but FX tails don’t get cut off when set to System. Seems odd when changing patterns manually works fine.

Sad trombone noise at Roland once again forgetting to make the dedicated HOLD button behave like every single other hold button they’ve ever put on a synth.

I was really hoping they would add the ability to hold an arp on more than one track.

Maybe there will be a 2.1 update soon to fine tune a few things, they obviously have a team working on this still, which is hugely encouraging and something we didn’t know until yesterday.

In my head, there is a single dev in a dusty office that just woke up after a 2 year nap.

it is time to buy it I think…I have postponed so many times due to the bad feedback I was getting from different users.

have you tried 2.0 yet? is it better now?

Now I’m interested again too. Im really liking some of the Roland sounds, I’ve been eyeballing the s-1 but this would cover so much more.

It seems like a great pairing for the digitakt. If using the digitakt means I wouldn’t have to use its sequencer.

It seems like a lot of people buy it and don’t keep it due to its bad UI. I also struggle to find many videos of people using the 4d.

Has this update fixed most of this?

Does it have a sem style filter? And also voice pan spread? I am looking for a small synth like the SH4d.

For those who think the UI is bad, no update can save it I think, the UI remains the same with an improved patch saving method.

For those who think the UI was good with a few annoyances, it’s all upside.

I haven’t updated yet, because the SH-4D is at the studio where I only go once a week to jam, but quite excited to try 2.0

Speaking of which. You won’t find Roland or Sh-4d or any of such keywords in our videos l because it’s not about gear. I’m not a synthfluencer, neither are any of my friends and band mates, and what really matters as it should is the music. That said we do a jam a week and we post the videos. Kraut/space rockish stuff, with some noise and dub on the side. I’m playing the Sh-4d only with the addition of a zoom ms-70cdr for compression and Blackhole style reverb.

Last Monday’s effort:

Spent a day with this new update and very impressed. Had no issues with the device as it was (it was never marketed by Roland as a Groovebox) and these new features have added so much more. Definitely worth the wait.

I appreciate the response and video link, I’ll get my headphones and give it a listen.

How do you find the UI? Do you think people might not be giving it enough time to get their head around it?

I’ve got a digitone paired with my takt which is great but I really want more variety of sounds while keeping the multiple voices. I imagine it’s quite robust in terms of midi cc, as I’d prefer to do any sequencing within the takt.

It happens to be on sale in Aus ($300) off so I’m trying to make my mind up asap.

I play live, so I don’t really use the sequencer or drums, I think most people complaints are about that . For live playing the UI is excellent, and the variety of sounds is great. To pair with an external sequencer, the fact that it has 4 part multimbrality, is very very useful.

I think if you approach this as a groove box (pre 2.0) you are going to have a bad time and then complain. If you approach it as a multitmbral polysynth, you will be happy. Very happy, provided you like the classic Roland sound.

I may be biased, but for 300 aus ??? That’s Behringer mono synth price, but you get 10x more synth for the money.

That’s great, I’d preferably be using it to shape patches and it looks quite immediate in that aspect. It’s currently $900 but usually $1200.

Ahh 300 off, not 300 total. Ooops.

Yes, I find that for live sound sculpting, 95% of the controls you want are on the front panel as one knob per function. You do need to menu dive a bit for the modulation matrix, but I don’t tend to do that live anyway.

I had an emotionally difficult week recently and on a whim I blew part of the ongoing new instrument fund on an s-1. It came and I’m not in love, I think volca/aira/tiny plastic synth world is just not my thing. I’m going to spend some time with it before I sell, but I’ve been reading this thread since it started and I have a gut feeling that I just should’ve waited and gotten the sh-4d.

I love the sound of the s-1 but I’m not sure I could get along with those tiny controls either, I have been tempted to get one anyway but the sh4d keeps stopping me.
