Sounds pretty similar in my (albeit) brief test, but I prefer the user interface of the SH-01a, it feels huge in comparison, and faster to dial in a sound, also you can see pretty much everything at a glance when in manual mode.
Thanks for the feedback. Some of the additional features of the S-1 are desirable, but ultimately interface is what matters most in terms of whether I actually use something. Think I’ll stick with what I have.
I’m waiting for my S-1, but I expect it to be very similar-sounding to the SH01A since it’s the same sound engine. The SH01A stores patches and sequences separately, so this might be a factor. However, the S-1’s sequencer has probabilities, unlike the other.
So… it’s alway the same thing with Roland. They make many devices that are very similar to each other, yet not a single of them nails it at 100 %…
Thanks for reminding me of this important detail, which had been mentioned earlier in the thread but I had fortogtten. This is one of the key sources of pleasure for me while using the SH0-1A – swapping patterns while using the same patch or vice versa. Shame they changed it on the S-1. Hopefully they’ll restore the option to do so in a firmware update.
Super useful indeed. The delay also has this pre/post mode for the volume knob, so, acting as a send and letting the delay ring when turned down, or volume for the delay output.
Pre is great for my use! I wish the sp-404 would have that as well.
Received mine yesterday. Was a bit skeptical at first, I’m guessing it’s not the same SOC as the SH-01A and the sales pitch says that it’s “inspired by the SH-101” so it makes no claim to be a faithful reproduction.
Anyways after giving it a proper workout this morning I’m happy. That happy in fact that I’ll throw my SH-01A & K25M on the bay this weekend and buy another S-1. I have a Launchpad Pro MK3 that’ll love to talk to a pair of S1’s.
Two S-1’s in almost the same footprint as a boutique? Winner.
Oh and the pots, even as small as they are are an absolute winner in terms of more precise control over the 01A’s sliders. Well, at least with my numb fingers !
Just like the T-8 (and the Volcas now I think of it) it’s nearly impossible to see where the notch in the encoders is pointing. Nothing a quick dab of paint can’t fix, but it’s a annoyance
One of my other hobbies is painting minis for various tabletop games, I’m lucky to have a good supply of brightly coloured acrylics I can use, but I shouldn’t have to I guess is my point
