Roland P6 Aira Compact sampler

Ricky’s video actually shows a good working method for learning it, different from what I would do with most synths. In this case, alternating between trial and error experiments and manual reading has yielded quicker learning than leaning hard on the manual, which is what I would do with any non-Roland product.

The people who designed the UI actually had some intuition, but the manual is fragmented and requires too much page-jumping re how to carry out a goal.

I still like the P-6 though.

The mute settings and all the others are fixed to the master pad where the step samples or chops live.

Cool. I was guessing that would be the case. Good to know for sure to kind of mentally plan out how to organize stuff.

I’m still thinking I’ll just use this for a single project at a time, so I don’t plan to go crazy putting tons of stuff on it.

I’ve had it for a couple nights now, way too busy with work, so I’ve just been testing out all the features and diving through the menus to get a lay of the land. I got to say, it’s very Roland. Things dont always work how you’d expect. So, you have to make compromises to work around and with the jankiness that’s there.

That being said, it’s kinda exactly what I wanted. Dope sampling and fx. Lo-fi. Portable. It’s a banger.

That’s how I envision using it too. I’ll probably clean slate it every time unless I’ve got some drums I want to keep using.

does he not work for Elektron though? I would not expect a stellar review of the P6 from him

In my experience he’s pretty fair, not a corporate shill.

But he is used to the Elektron sequencers, seemed to throw him off for a sec in the video when he had to turn REC off to step sequence. (On a DT, REC would need to be on to do that).

How deep is the granular engine? I know it can’t possibly be as deep as the Lemondrop, but I’m looking to perhaps replace it with something that is a more all-in-one solution even with some sacrifices.

Is it even remotely comparable?

Also interested in a comparison.

4 notes polyphony too
2 granular oscs
16 grains per osc
128 grains vs 32 (4x8) for P6

2 filters, 2 lfos, 2 ADSR, 2 FX slots.

Question is how is the lemondrop granular?

I stayed away from Lemondrop as I love Borderlands Granular App on the iPad. - the P6 granular i think is very basic from the sped I read

Good livestream from iamlowkey. I dig how easy it is to change the number of chops. Nondestructive.

Honestly, I love the sound, but I find it a bit finnicky. I love the live input, but it seems like overkill for how much I use it … just looking for something that could get me relatively close but also have other use cases (such as sampling).

Now if the stupid MC101 had something better than ‘scatter’ all my potential GAS would be solved!

That kid deserves an SP1200. Ive followed him for a bit and he has some great content.

My god. If even Ricky Tinez is finding something too arcane and menu-divey, then there is no hope for me.

GAS = averted

Man I love Roland, I buy a lot of their stuff and it sounds great, but can they not just hire someone that can build a nice UI already?! Jesus

Man, the phaser effect from the P6 on his Rhodes at like an hour and 38 minutes or so in sounds really good. He’s a good keys player as well.

Edit: He’s a great keys player! You don’t see many lofi beat makers break into a beautiful rendition of Miles Davis’s Blue in Green (or whatever that was) on the piano during a gear demo.

I couldn’t even watch the whole video, as soon as I saw the amount button pushes for simple tasks I was done… that’s the price you pay for miniaturisation I guess…🤷🤦

Exactly, this is why I stayed with the App

Pretty much my reaction; I got about halfway through.

I don’t know, Ricky admitted he doesn’t know what he’s doing yet. Watching anyone use gear they don’t know well is painful. Kind of did it a bit of disservice I think, although I think he did name the video “learning new gear is hard”’or something. I’m pretty impressed with what I’ve seen from Iamlowkey’s videos. He’s pretty quick with it. It all seems mostly straight forward to me, although I’ve yet to see anyone do anything with the granular function.
