Roland JX-08 & JD-08

I did for the A but B stays the same on channel 4.

Did anyone manage to get working both parts at the same time, each with 4 layers on JD-08?

How?
I can only select A or B, not both at the same time…

I just got the JX-08. It’s my first ever Roland thang and I’m so surprised and impressed by the sound of it. I love pretty much everything about it soundwise. Maybe it’s because I’m an old fart and nostalgia has whipped me up into a teenage frenzy? I was initially not so drawn to the Boutique format but this little gem is exceeding all expectations.
I’m also very surprised there isn’t more stuff online raving about it - or maybe I just don’t know where to look!
I was at first pulled more towards the JD but fuck it… maybe I’ll treat myself later in the year!

Thank you for your post. It saves me the trouble of writing my own. It reflects exactly how I think about the JX-08. I’ am an ā€œoldā€ fart too! The only difference is that I am not interested in JD at all

ā€œMANUAL MODE
Press the MANUAL button, it will flash and then press again to confirm and enter manual mode. Here, rather than preset sounds, we hear exactly what is set on the panel of the JX-08. This is a great mode for learning to program your own sounds.ā€

Not the official one, but a very, very nice pdf-manual:

Utilized hard panning of the JD-08 parts to hack getting 2 separate outputs. Something I was doing when my set up was a Boss Dr-5, a 2 input guitar amp as my ā€œmixerā€ and some fx pedals back in the day…I know there’s a lot of magic to be squeezed out of the JD in stereo but it’s also good to know that this is a work around when using hardware only.

Curious if anyone else’s unit does this and what a possible fix for it might be….

I have everything setup and working fine with midi channels, my external sequencer, and panning of the parts to have two separate tracks on my mixer. However when I have a sequence running, being sent from the Oxi One, and I switch from part A to B on the JX, part A stops playing. B continues playing without issue, both resume playing when I switch back to A.

It’s not the end of the world but occasionally I want to switch to tone B to tweak the sound a bit and if it’s a live situation I need A to continue play when I do.

Thoughts?

The JD-08 finally has a pdf copy of the manual for download….

Question for anyone here with a JX-08:

What exactly is going on with the two envelopes?

I know I can ADSR the VCA with ENV2, but I don’t understand what is going on with the envelope mode selection switches for the DCO2, Mixer and VCF sections…
Say, if I select env2 on say the filter, does this mean the same env I make for the amp is being applied?

I’m really loving the capabilities of this little synth, but the way the envelope section behaves is baffling.

Had the JD-08 for about a two weeks now.

The issue that I’ve found is that there seems to be no way to preview the original value of a slider/knob parameter in a patch or tone other than just moving the slider and causing param jump to the new parameter value. It wouldn’t seem that hard for Roland to fix this in a firmware update if they could be bothered, considering the screen already can display the parameter value on moving the slider anyway. It looks like a parameter value preview feature was possible on the original JD-800 when I looked through it’s original user manual.

The other annoyance is no way to copy a partial/tone on to another partial/tone that I can find, this makes patch building a very slow process.

yes… and you also have the poti to dial-in how much you’d like to affect the filter(pos/neg) with ENV2

Really loving the JX.

I had a JD and a JX but sent the JD back in favor of a second JX. I’d rather have 4 part JX than a 2/2 split with the JD JX combo.

The JX is, surprisingly, one of the better sounding synths I’ve played in a while. It really hits the nostalgia full force with the presets and the slider laden front panel makes it easy to shape the sound however you want.

My new favorite synth.

Wound up going back for another boutique; a JU-06A instead of the JX-08. I liked the form factor a lot, but what I really love from Roland are those Juno and Jupiter sounds.

I’ll miss the multitimbral power the JX-08 has, but give me simple for now!

nice!

The JD-08 is pretty great. It has a ton of depth for sound sculpting for four layers of sounds and the time based envelopes. That said I’m thinking of selling mine.

The bass sounds I am looking for
Wet bass Roland JD-800 - the 64 classic factory patches - YouTube
Modular bass Roland JD-800 - the 64 classic factory patches - YouTube
Chinkvox/Bass (the bass) Roland JD-800 - the 64 classic factory patches - YouTube

Being presets of Roland JD-800… I bet I should then go for the JD-08?
Does MC101 can play bass sounds like that? Having 4 tracks would be a plus

I am considering getting it
Can I ask you what do you think about the sequencer compared to Elektron’s? A midi keyboard is a must?
