Roland AIRA Compact Series: T-8 beat, J-6 chord & E-4 voice

Someone into Eurorack can afford a better option that a T8. And they likely will.

T8 and this line is for those that by Novation Circuit crowd. Aka those that buy many cheaper one trick pony gear.

and exactly, MC101 is a way better option instead of pokemon collecting these stuff.

I don’t think the MC-101 is a better option than the T-8 if you want a little acid machine. I had the MC-101 and 707 and nether can emulate a 303.

They will.

You will just have to buy that soundpack, like Roland always makes you do.

So I have the j6 and t8 now for about 24 hours. In that time I have spent about three hours with the devices.
The haptic is no comparison to the volcas. True, they are also made out of plastic but they feel much higher quality. The knobs and buttons are (at least on t8) smaller than you might think but after 5 minutes you get used to it.
I like the audio thru very much. two cables connected and there you go. Here, I first had to learn that a sync cable works only in mono. But even the midi connection works plug and play, without the hassle of menu diving.
For me the concept of easily accessible equipment is fully and completely. Only the display I find horrible. I can not get used to this representation of the letters. Here I’m going to need a little time to know the menu item meaning.
Which to me raises the question of what such a display is good for.
As for the audio quality I have to say, these things sound terrific.
of course you don’t have many soundshaping possibilities, but as a result you concentrate more on the melodies, rhythms, or simply focusing only jamming.
I like the t8 up a notch better than the j6. I was never really a big fan of 303, but the thing has charm and simple sounds good. The Juno sound is not my cup of tea. This is certainly a matter of taste but I personally don’t like it.
I actually i knew that before purchasing it.
My targeted usecase for the j6 is to use it as a MIDI sequencer or keyboard for my DN. I haven’t tried it yet but that should work easily.

All in all I am very satisfied with these two devices and I would buy both again at any time. a built-in battery was never important for me but now that I have a portable device with battery in my hand I must say, that’s amazing. (Couch, bed, toilet (don’t buy my gear second hand!))
Even my daughter enjoys it

Well that’s the cutest thing I’ve seen all day! I’m glad to know you’re digging the T8. I’m totally sold on the E4 but lately I’ve been thinking the T8 might go good in my mini ā€˜shitrig’ which I use for harsh noise, lo-fi ambient or any impromptu/super short notice kind of gig. I’ve got the Deton8 as main drum machine in that rig mainly due to its size but the T8 is barely bigger, sounds much ā€˜stronger’ and of course 303 action.

Anyhow, thanks for the write up!

First jam with the whole AIRA Compact line-up!

To be 100% transparent these were sent by Roland but here’s a quick review anyway : as mentioned by others, the sound quality is way more impressive than with the Volca series, and the battery is an amazing addition! I really love the T-8 sound even though it’s limited in term of sound design. The sequencer is powerful but not very immediate, you need shortcuts for pretty much everything, even switching between pages. The reverb/delay both sound cool and are nice for performing.

The J-6 sounds really cool too, it’s not super deep but it’s pretty easy to make some amazing chords/arpeggios on the fly. The sequencer is super limited but you could use it with an external sequencer like the DT to get the most out of its 4 voice polyphony! I wish it had an attack control for the envelope but oh well.

Finally the E-4 is probably my favourite of the three, just because it’s a bit more unique! I love the features and the controls, even the effects are surprisingly good. My main issue with it is that the autotune part is not as forgiving as a proper autotune software. If your pitch is a bit wobbly some ā€œwrongā€ notes will sometimes slip through and for this video I ended up manually correcting the pitch of some notes in post. It would probably more than enough for a real singer though!

Anyway these are my thoughts, hope you’ll enjoy the music.

Great stuff, thanks for sharing this. Love James Blake as well. Are you doing all of this live? It seemed like there were a few background vocal parts that came in that I didn’t see you sing so was wondering where those came from. Overall really cool stuff, I’d see this kind of thing live if I could.

Even if they let you switch some drums, you could buy 2 and have Rebirth

I’m glad you didn’t head into full ā€˜trap’ mode … more interesting to keep it minimal James Blake / sohn style.

I think the vocoder / fx box can be used in nice ways when chopped in/out

Hey thanks a lot! The background vocals were recorded beforehand yeah, I just loaded them into the RC-505 so that I could control the volume during the performance. Otherwise yeah everything is done live. :slightly_smiling_face:

Holding shift while using the envelope knob gives you attack control.

I had some loyalty points at Andertons and ended up ordering all 3 :joy:

Ohhh, that makes so much sense! Thanks for the heads up, I feel kinda dumb now, aha, I didn’t have access to the manual when I first got them but this seems pretty logical now that you mention it.

The J-6 seems like a missed opportunity…
4-note polyphony in a chord machine, with literally 6 in the name.

I think it is because it is based around the JU-06 ACB model which was also only 4 voice, IIRC it is a limitation of the platform used.

But yeah 6 voice would have been nice.

All 3 just arrived today-

So far linked the t-8 and j-6 and and having a total blast with them. Insane fun and instant smiles. Gonna try the e-4 next but I’m already declaring these to be a total home run. I’m a groovebox obsessive and think I’ve had everyone under the sun. These are just so so fun and accessible.

I love the mx-1 and if they make a compact one I will be over the moon with joy!

Is there any way to record into the looper of E-4 from the others? - I don’t think so from the mix in but maybe from the mic in (with a bit of attenuation if it can’t accept line signals in mic input)

This could be fun

I think in loopop’s video he says the mix in or mix out (can’t remember which) is trrs so using a trrs headphone and mic splitter you can push audio into the scatter fx etc but only in mono.

I’ve ordered the j6, really looking forward to getting it.

Yeah I did it from the mix in! It didn’t work that great but I think that was just my newness to the machine. I think it works well but I’ll try again later.
