Roland AIRA Compact Series: T-8 beat, J-6 chord & E-4 voice

My wife has had these stashed for my birthday, which is tomorrow! It’s been painful waiting so long knowing they’re in the bottom of the wardrobe. Can’t wait to try them

Would choking not be a feature of the sequencer itself?

You can set the key using the sequencer, the manual lists the notes when key is set to C, so I think that when you change the key in the sequencer step the chords will shift to that key.

Edit: Not 100% sure as I don’t use it like that.

the manual doesn’t mention scale, just chord sets. As looking through the list of the chord sets, they are done for all the 12 keys, each included in it’s chord, so i think they are chromatic. There are some sets where the white keys have only white notes, so at least some of it can be related to c major (playing only the whites). don’t own it, but read the manual.

proud new owner of an E4, though, as my VT-4 is dying (formant shifting out of the blue, without touching anything).
The E4 is fun!

I didn’t see it mentioned my first scan through. I’ll check again. My hopes are not up though

The T8 on its own is pretty special. My favorite new box. Hands down.

I’m not a microphone person but can you recommend one to use with the E4? What kind of special adapter do I need? Also assuming the mic has to be powered, right?

Nah, I just use a Sennheiser dynamic mic, works fine.

Possibly a dirty slider/pot?

Music theory isn’t my thing, I just go by what sounds alright

it has a 1/4 inch jack, and a 1/8 inch trrs for the output which can also host a mic. so no phantom.

oh that would be nice! how to clean that, with air?

Caig fader flush, then relube it, most of the time IME makes it as good as new, Caig is pricey but handy stuff to have around.

Nah. No setting to choke the hats when sequencing them externally. Little bit of an oversight there…

Also. I’m trying hard to like the J6. If I stay away from the arp sequences, it’s cool. Kind of.

I finally got to play with the T-8 and J-6 this morning. First impressions are that the T-8 is an awesome little box for the price. Limited drums but there’s enough control to keep it interesting. Would have loved 909 hats though, hoping they add some more options (and I would probably pay a small amount for it). The 303 sounds great!

The J-6 I’m still trying to get my head around, reminds me a bit of scaler but in hardware. Limited sound control but plenty of nice sounding patches. Need to spend a bit more time with this one. Will make a nice dub techno machine I’m sure.

Question about the J6. Are all the chord progressions based off of the key of C?

I haven’t been transposing the keyboard but rather just playing the scale from the keyboard as it is.

Thanks!

The chord sets aren’t, don’t know about the progressions, though

Picked one of these up yesterday and have had an hour or so with it. It’s fun. I think I’ll probably end up using it mostly to sequence other gear. The sequencer is simple but has enough to make it useful. The sounds are of course limited but they sound good to my ears. For creating simple melodies and progressions it does exactly what’s needed.

So I don’t need to transpose the keyboard to be in the key I want? I can pick a chord set and just play a F minor scale?

Thanks!

Working hard for my $200. I decided it’s probably best to just transpose the keyboard to the key I want to work in and play my chord set from there.

Also, I got the manual open while flipping through the arp/sequences. That’s super helpful.

The math you gotta do to build sequences is a bit much. For example, I have to make the Steps play 1/2 a beat in order to get a 16 beat sequence on 8 steps - honestly I should’ve have to think that hard to make music :sunglasses:

But the J6 is growing on me. Getting things to sound a bit more techno and not so 90s classic house

Anyone else not able to send midi notes from the J6 via the USB cable. I can’t get the box to play synths in Ableton or on my MPC when using the USB cable.

It works when I use a regular midi cable though.

Never mind - figured out out. You have to start it in battery-only mode.

Really enjoying the T-8. Does anyone have a feel for how likely it is that Roland will add cc control for cutoff etc. with a firmware update? Wishful thinking probably :slightly_smiling_face:

Does the j6 come with a 3.5mm midi adapter?
