RIP Sinéad O'Connor, age 56, passes away

God her story’s so sad. Her poor son checked out last year and I guess she never recovered from it.

If there’s an afterlife, I wish them the best.

I still remember seeing her first appearance on SNL. 2 years before the one that everyone talked about.

The 1990 SNL performance is not on YouTube. But this video has a live recording of doing the same song she did on the show. It blew me away, her energy and passion is so raw it just pours out.

I think she does not get any credit for paving the way for a lot of other artists through the 90s.

I was abused (not sexually) by a catholic priest as a preteen. Mom made be go be an alter boy until i was 13 and told her i didn’t believe in that shit anymore, and she wasn’t big enough to make me do anything and i wasn’t afraid of her anymore.

Sinead was a powerful message that i was not alone. Rest in power sister!

This is a tough one. I’ve always loved her music and her bravery. Those first two albums? Masterpieces and she was barely out of her teens. Stunning live performer too. She’s still in heavy rotation in my home and always will be. Just a towering talent and an incomparable voice, I will truly miss her. Fight the real enemy… :fist:t2:

One of my favorite songs of all time!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Ireland react to a death of a public figure like that. Her influence on this country changed it forever, and kickstarted our path to modernity. Her voice, her music, her activism and her presence are a profound loss.

As has been said numerous times already … what a courageous, beautiful person … what a tragic loss. RIP.

These two songs were always my favourites:

:astonished: totally unexpected.
RIP Sinéad

Basically just her voice and the funky drummer loop. Magic.

Rest in power :sparkles:
I love this album of hers :ethiopia:

Morrissey has said a lot of stupid or much worse things over the years but this he got very right.

I don’t really ever feel sad when celebraties pass, but this one has caught me blindsided. Never even got deep into her music, but as a human I really respected Sinead. She said what we were all thinking. Music industry killed itself in the end. The Church has been exposed… And her art will live on. Respect and love.

Sinead represented a lot of people’s inner mind that they are afraid to reveal lest they be shunned for being ‘crazy’.

Besides her musical talent which is huge …

She leaves behind a really thought provoking concept: why are we so keen to assimilate and not rock the boat? Time rushes on, and we’ll all soon be gone like Sinead. It takes a brave soul to forge their own path, and it is not the right decision for most who can’t hack the rough road. But we all can admire her humanity, as that which we hide away, perhaps through lack of courage or realising that assimilation is the easier path through life. But she leaves us challenging ourselves with that.
And the beauty of youth and aging.

Long lasting respect for her uncompromising impact and the self challenge she brings us about humanity and our being human in an increasingly rejective world.

Playing a show tomorrow and I wanted to do a tribute to her memory. This is her singing “War” at the Bob Dylan tribute with the backwards version Avril 14th, which always felt like what floating up to heaven might sound like. thought the juxtoposition of the the two tracks captured something slightly magical.

to be consoled as to console
to be understood as to understand
to be loved as to love with all my soul
make me a channel of your peace

let me live 'neath your spell
do, do - that
voo-doo - that
you do - so well

Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Thou shalt tread upon the lion & adder: the young lion & the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

Back in 2018

I was invited to Shane MacGowan’s 60th.
Nick Cave, Bobby Gillespie , Amelda May , BP Fallon , Bono , Lisa O’Neill, Finbar Fury, with Cait O’Riordan, Spider Stacy, Jem Finer, Terry Woods of The Pogues - all there to celebrate Shane but one artist in particular stood out by a country mile -Sinéad O Connor -
and she stole the show.
After the show we went back stage for a drink before heading back to Belfast and suddenly Sinéad appeared. As she walked in my direction, and knowing that this was my one chance to talk to her I quickly introduced myself and told her that I wanted to make a record with her about healing. To my surprise her ears pricked up and after a quick chat she gave me her number not having a clue who I was. I’ll never forget that moment and how tickled she was - fully endorsing my brass neck. That was Sinéad. We stayed in touch and over the course of the next 5 years we somehow made that record. We only had one track to record which we planned on creating in sept, but saying that, the 8 tracks we finished together, each one as powerful as the next. Every time i recorded her in my studio it was a pinch yourself moment. I really felt that I was in the presence of greatness like a Nina Simone , Billie Holiday or Karen Dalton. A giant in popular music but what made her so special, apart from that voice and vision was her fearlessness & honesty not only as an artist but as a human being. I always felt that Sinéad was light years ahead of her time. The bravery of standing up on SNL and calling out the Catholic Church for protecting monsters disguised as priests & nuns. She spoke truth to power and was cancelled for it. Sinéad was the definition of Art.
Sinéad was a disrupter , a dreamer , an outsider and outlier, radical , upsetter , the high priestess of Irish soul & punk , incredibly intelligent , ridiculously kind and so fucking funny. I’m gonna miss her very much but feel totally privileged to have become her friend. At this minute my thoughts are with Sinead’s family and her inner circle. Thank you Sinéad O Connor. You taught me so much.
No Veteran Dies alone. :broken_heart:

This performance sums up what I love about music. I have never seen a person sing a ballad with so much energy. It’s so beautiful yet so punk, so honest and powerful. It’s like you can see the whole range of human emotion in this performance:
