RIP D’Angelo

I always thought D’Angelo had the saddest eyes. Never quite understood the parallels with Prince, more like Marvin Gaye to my ears. A modern classic. RIP.

Damn, thinking about their son right now.

Puts it in perspective.

The Prince parallel relates to it being one of his musical idols and they took things like recording at lower pitches, played back faster to hit higher notes like Prince would do. For me, I hear Prince much more on Black Messiah,

Way too soon. His kid already lost his mother earlier this year, Angie Stone, and now his father also.

For me, Black Messiah evoked Stevie Wonder at his best, but reflected and refracted through a modern prism. Just stunning on headphones. I am overdue to explore his other work.

I remember being horrified as a kid that man’s body could look that amazing on the cover of his first album, while I was sitting loving the songs. This was the time when covers still had some content, and were part of the experience when listening to an album.

Then I got sad as and adult, when reading about how the image he had created for himself gave him an impossible standard to maintain. Everyone expected him to look like that cover when performing live, and he couldn’t maintain that Marvel type physique. Meanwhile, he had music that was amazing that should have been the main focus, but understandably it wasn’t for all fans.

Really sad to see him go this soon, RIP.

Such a huge loss. I got into Voodoo belatedly, about 10 years after it came out, and I was blown away by its funkiness, like, I could tell there was something about it that was just beyond the bounds of my, like, rhythmic comprehension.

Learned a couple years ago (Digging the Greats youtube video about it) that he and Questlove had set out with the explicit goal of making their live instrumentation sound like J Dilla’s sampling technique and timing.

And then Black Messiah was on another level, an all-time favorite of mine, too.

RIP
PS: man, those horn arrangements, the self-group vocals, it’s all so good…

I got to see him at the House of Blues in Boston. It was his first show in years and the band had to stop and restart a couple of songs. It was a joy to watch. Jesse Johnson from The Time was on guitar. RIP D’Angelo :broken_heart::dove:

Very few performers who have stayed so often behind the veil are able to pull name recognition among fans and critics alike as D’Angelo.

Truly a generational talent and for those of a certain age this man’s presence in music was unavoidable.

As iconic in memory as in life.

RIP, much too young.

RIP!
Voodoo is one of favorite albums of all time. The way they implemented that JDilla swing on actual instrumentation was ground breaking!
