hey !! a question for the modular user. I don’t want to start with modular because I know that it’s way too expensive. but there is a module called Rings from Mutable Instruments and when you play drums through it it sounds great. the question arises whether it is possible to use a module like a stomp box? the aim is to play the rytm through it. here is a dawless setup with midas mixer. what would one bring to make this possible?
Cheapest approch:
Do you know VCV Rack? It´s an software Modular for your computer.
There are almost all MI Hardware Modules inside, including Rings.
They all have other names (Rings is named Resonator) but have the
same Layout & behaviour like the Modules.
So tried to route your Rytm Audio in VCV Rack.
The other approch was to buy a small Case mit Power. You will need that, because Module come with no Case (just a Frontpanel and the backside is naked electronic Stuff).
Sorry for my poor english
If you have an iOS device, you could download Spectrum which is a free implementation of many mutable algorithms: Spectrum Synthesizer Bundle on the App Store. I think miRack for iOS also has a rings module.
You can then run your Rytm through your iOS device. You’d need an audio interface to get good quality sound, but there are a lot of pretty cheap options. For example, If you have a zoom microphone many of those can be used as an audio interface with iOS.
Lots of good info already round the internets
very good tips here - thank you !!
@Sprudelwasser, I know VCV Rack, great tip, I haven’t even thought about that yet, I wonder if there are sound differences when you use the hardware instead of the software. because i actually want to get away from the computer, otherwise i already do too much. The aim is to transfer the complete signal from the MIDAS to the DAW at the end of production, in order to then send it to the master.
No, there is no differences, because both are based on the same source code, which one is b.t.w open source.
Yep, sounds familar to me and is the cause for my always empty wallet
Honestly not worth it. Rings has a nice sound, but it will always sound the same and will get boring real quick if you plan on using it on every recording.
The code is open source so you should be able to find various ITB versions to test it out with.
If VCV isn’t to your liking, the Poly effects Beebo has a port of rings, and that’s all you would need, as opposed to having to muck about with line levels in euro. It will introduce some latency though.
You’d really want to learn a lot more about modular first as opposed to jumping in with this as a goal. VCV or the Beebo would help you learn the concepts without needing to go down the road of buying modular as an inexperienced user, which can lead to a lot of rebuying / selling / shuffling.
hey! I already know my way around a bit, I would say. I think with eurorack, you can add everything according to gusto yourself, so which OSC s you e.g. best liked, filters, LFOs, delays, sequencers, distortion, granular etc. … well I already know exactly what this is about.
i am particularly interested in this effect. it resembles a ring modulation and unfortunately, clever ring modulators in hardware are also rare. therefore i use a lot of frequency modulation with lfo s in analog synth, although it is not the same, but still offers interesting sounds. I would have e.g. like the moog ring modulator, but unfortunately quite expensive. with that I would do without rings. also filters such as the morpheus modular would be nice in a stomp box … even a filter for morphing. in the A4 neighbor mode can build to some extent himself.
A couple other ways to get rings without modular or an iPad -
Poly Beebo (modular pedal) has a rings port in it:
Critter and Guitari Organelle with rngs
Otherwise Rings (or a clone) in a 4ms Pod (powered) with a pedal I/O module like Strymon AA.1 would do the trick.
Yes its totaly possible, a modular FX rack is a thing. I started out that way with a AJH SYNTH Next Phase and my Rytm sounds great through that. Signal levels in modular are higher so you will probably need modules to boost the signal in and attenuate the output.
And you will need a power supply and case[rails] for the modules maybe you could get all that + rings for four to five hundred pounds and you will have great fun with it, but then you will start to want to automate some of the modulation [two hands is not enough] Pamelas New Workout or better still a Planar II … you want to clock it now you need something to do that. Things seem to keep a good second hand price so when your tired of Rings you could swap it out for a Mimephone or have both … it never ends and its a fun ride and its more alive than a DAW and your not forced to climb that ladder of OS and APP upgrades
You could try to find one of these - Blue Lantern Rings Resonator Desktop Expanded Version | JP's | Reverb
wow, what is that … that looks nice !?
Ah, that doesn’t seem to be that easy … automation is especially important to me, i.e. precise automation when arranging with the OT.
From Blue Lantern, he builds a bunch of eurorack modules, a lot of mutable clones - https://www.bluelanternstore.com/
I think he sells a lot on Reverb now. No idea if he made a lot of those desktop rings, but he might do one by request if you contact him.
O you can automate everthing with an ever increasing outlay of cash. I can really recomend the Intellijel PlanarII it can record 30sec of joystick movment… I dont think you could get the subtleties and speed with any other interface I clock that and Pamelas New Workout to MIDI BPM with the sync output of a Keystep, that seems to work better than using the A4 [Pamela likes it better]
If automation with midi cc from OT is important to you, I’d go with VCV Rack. Works well.
Pamela is working well as a midi slave with the sync B port from Elektron devices set as Din Sync. You will need a 9 euro ALM midi to dual mini jack(clock/reset) cable.
Thanks for pointing that out I had forgoten you could reassign the midi out to din that is probably a better solution in most cases. When i tried Pam with the clock out from the A4 CV outputs it just said unstable.
