Resale value of OG digi devices is obscene in the wrong direction

I can only think that this directly correlates to these devices selling so well and being produced in such mass quantities that the market is just absolutely saturated. That is probably a first for Elektron, to produce numbers like that.

I suspect that 4 or more Digitakt exist for every MD that was produced, maybe more. Maybe more like 10 to 1.

I don’t really have a point, I’m just thoroughly disgusted.

I always thought that digitakt was Elektrons entry level sampler/box for masses. And to be mass produced.

Is that why you use it?

Wrong direction as in too expensive or under priced?

Last year, DT and DN were going for $500ish CAD, which I thought was a very good deal. Now I see them going for $700-800 which is making me raise an eyebrow.

$300USD is too low of a return on a digitakt.

I mean you can buy them for affordable price today, and make good music on it.
Kinda similar story with tb303 or roland stuff back in the day. No?

TB303 was an engineering failure and it took years for it to gain any popularity for it’s quirks. That’s not the same. It’s like comparing a stick to a fork.

Yeah, it was more affordable then md or analog Rythm when i wanted to buy one elektron box. And i love working with samples

My point exactly. It’s market value is not proportionate to it’s utility.

resale value shouldnt really be a concern when obtaining a device to make music with, imo. it’s for making music with. if the market being saturated upsets you you’re doing it wrong in my humble opinion.

I can’t tell if you’re joking or not with this thread tho

There are no jokes here. I own 3 OG devices and the total value is under $1k USD. That doesn’t even buy me one digitakt 2.

so?

thats the way it goes. enjoy your devices innit.

That’s definitely one way to treat money.

I see em as musical instruments, not commodities / investments or whatever. but ymmv.

Why? They are just consumer products. Try selling a 2016 iPhone.

Wait until you’re in a position where you need them to be money and get back to me.

These things aren’t an investment. They are tools. If you don’t want to lose money on the resale value of a used item, your options are either not to buy the item or not to sell the item. Frankly, the jump in resale prices for music gear around 2020 was fucking absurd and I’m glad prices are dropping back to where they were.

Edit: that said, I am sympathetic to needing to sell things because of life circumstances, I’ve been there. I’ve been so hungry I had to scrounge garbage for food. But this isn’t some moral problem and it’s not a failure of the market, used items should be substantially cheaper than buying new.

I think OG resale values are low because MK2 made them look like outdated and there are a lot of them. That said, when you see the cost of MK2 units, i think it’s outrageously expensive compared to what cost MK1 in the time of release and I feel like the gap between a used MK1 (whose price doesn’t reflect it’s capacities) and a too expensive new MK2 is ridiculously high.

Free market mate. I think market is saturated not just with Digitakt, but with a kit if its competition, and supply is surely bigger then demand
