Replacing mk2 button - SCARED!

I want to replace one of the new mk2 buttons to swap the coloured track buttons of the Digitone Keys with plain black ones from the Octatrack mk2. How do you replace them - has anyone done it? I don’t want to go pulling at them if that might break anything. Thanks, H

The octatrack mk2 ones would not fit the digitone because they are larger.

If you want black keys on the digitone you should get black keys from the new model “digitone keys”

The swapping process is easily done using a thin guitar pick that you carefully slide under and pop them out. Then place your new keycaps on and lightly press until you feel a click.

I want to replace rytm mk1 old worn out faceplate but also i’m afraid to pull buttons off, they sits so tight there…

To replace faceplates, I’m guessing only the knob pots should come off.

I have no experience regarding mk1 models, but the construction seems simmilar.

There are detailing videos on yt showing an ot mk1 being taken apart.

It’s the T1, T2 etc. buttons from the Octatrak I’m fitting, rather than the step keys as it were. I’ve got the spare buttons from Elektron already, and they look the same size. Just a matter of prising them off without savaging the unit!

great idea, also I will prefer a gray FUNC button from octatrack and all black trig buttons from DNK. Someone will say that this is ‘depressive’ digitone, but it seems more solid for me.
can you describe process of getting buttons from elektron?

Ah, true. Sorry, I partially misunderstood the post. All good then. The replacing of the keycaps is an easy job, no fear! :control_knobs:

PHEW! That was stressful… Essentially just get a flat piece of plastic (a thin guitar pick WOULD have been ideal) but had a few toothpick type tools which worked ok. Just have balls of steel and slip it down the side to ping them off - feels like they’re gonna break!

I’d do that to a DN too since the whiter keys would get yellow soon.

As for the func key, I prefer the DT one over all

To get keycaps from elektron, all you have to do is open a support ticket stating you’d like to order a specific spare part and the desired qtty.

glad you were able to figure it out, even if I think it was a weird thing to do. I like the colored track buttons. but hey, it’s your machine!

surprised Elektron didn’t give you information on how to remove and replace them safely though.

Honestly, it’s difficult to overstate the improvement this makes to the usability of the track buttons. The colours were so distracting and completely pointless.

Eric Johnson TX pick was the weapon of choice.

But the colours make the digitone CUTE!

Same story with the hate the grey MkIIs got. Feels like half the people on this forum are goths or something :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I like colour (and I like the colour accents for the FUNC buttons on the Digis and grey mk2s). I just didn’t like those colours in that context.

I tease! Though I love those little skittles on mine. Reminds me of the old SNES gamepad!

Awhile back when I still had DN, I was considering getting a DNK too. Then I was going to switch out the white trig ‘keys’ from DN to DNK to have an all black DN for drums, and a black and white keys version for synths

cliffs of dover… eric johnson is the best, met him in austin a few years back hes good friends with a family friend of mine, lance keltner. great tunes!

haha this way, by ordering red REC keycaps, you could essentially make the new octatrack black edition look like the AE edition

For anyone else looking for tips on how to remove the buttons and you don’t have a guitar pick, a credit card works perfectly well, too.
