Reliq Matrix Mixer

By the way:

Contrary to the information stated on discord, you unfortunatly cannot VESA-Mount the Reliq yet.

Bummer, but good to know. I’m also clearing some space around my modular setup to accomodate the Reliq.

Another one arriving in Hamburg soon. I payed 246,81 € (tax and shipping)

The Reliq is indeed a “big fella”. Had to clear the decks a little to fit it in, and I haven’t yet decided whether to rack mount the breakout box.

I haven’t fired it up yet (hopefully this evening) but build construction and buttons feel great!

Looking forward to your report on this. I’m currently using a Hapax, but the Reliq has had my eye for the past year. Would like to get some kind of idea on how the two compare.

wowowowow… it’s huuuuuuuge! More pics and reporting please! I was in love from the moment I saw it as a prototype. So many buttons tho haha

Curious how people feel about the ergonomics… always hesitant on devices that go that far back on a table without a tilting screen… I suppose that is what tilting stands are for.

Yeah. I get the footprint — it’s a mixer after all. It’s roughly mixer-sized. But most mixers are wedge-shaped. I’m surprised this isn’t.

I guess, with the break-out box they’re not constrained to fit all those ports on the back? And decided (like you say) if people want the angle for usability reasons they can get a stand? But it’d have to be a big stand and particularly unwobbly. I wonder if “mixer, but with faders and pots replaced with pad matrix” might have been the better form factor?

But I know nothing. People with their hands on it are the opinions that will count.

Reminds me of the similar complaints about the ergonomics of the Akai Force when trying to use it seated at a desk.

I’m just getting into it, but so far really enjoying the experience.

I’ve got it on a rolling mixer stand (Griffin Studio Mixer STand) so I can angle it, adjust it to my preferred height, and move it around easily to different sides of my studio/office. I’m not sure why @jemmons was speculating it would be wobbly, it’s definitely not with my setup.

The screen is bright and very readable from all angles. That’s with the screen protector on :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:; eventually I’ll build up the courage to remove the protector.

Knobs feel quality and the “joystick” (right hand side) feels robust but easily manipulable.

The buttons feel like the same material as the Hapax but stand out slightly more from from the surface of the device and require slightly less pressure – I like them better than the ones on the Hapax.

If you’re willing to deal with the increased size, the 16 x 16 grid is awesome.

So far I’ve only started exploring the Sequencer functionality, using CV as output. Seems well done so far. It’s got easy and intuitive access to velocity, microtiming, etc. The sequencer has none of the fancy Effects of the Hapax, but I wasn’t expecting that I don’t know if the Reliq team even aspires to that level of complexity. [EDIT: It turns out there are plans for LOTS of MIDI FX]

Lots more to explore on this. Will report in periodically with my thoughts and feedback…

If I recall correctly, I believe the Reliq team has said that at some point they will also create a stand. Hopefully, it’s not too unwieldy for such a large sequencer. And not too, well . . . ugly.

There is a list of MIDI FX on the Reliq homepage, some of which are similar to the Hapax. And a few which are different to what’s on the Hapax. According to the most recent Update on IndieGoGo, they were not able to include any of the effects in this initial release. They are going to be part of the April firmware update.

… looking here, there seems to be no mention of Tuplets …
… but I think it should become possible with Zoom factors …

FWIW, I didn’t think it’d be wobbly. I said any stand for it would have to be large and unwobbly (large because of the footprint. Unwobbly because there are push buttons right up to each edge of the mixer, so any wobble in the stand gets amplified by leverage). Glad the Griffin is up to the task! Sure looks a beauty

The way the screen is spread across the whole pad area is lovely !
How does it deal with time signatures ? Can you set step per pages so the first beat is always on the first pad for each page ? Is time signature linked to a project or can it change inside a project ?

You photographed it before playing with it?

Priorities :joy:

This might be a mater of interest to one or the other, as not too costly a VESA-Mounting alternative:

If it has to sit on such an extra stool, there would be cabeling hanging around, in a not so shiny new situation. Not sure if that is really practical.

Well, there’s very little cabling on the Reliq itself. Just power, midi (TRS), and then USB for various host duties and, of course, for the break-out box.

So it’s kind of a question of where the break-out sits. If it’s near the gear and the Reliq gets treated as a “remote”, I could imagine this working pretty well in theory (providing one has a USB-C cable long and sturdy enough to make the run).

In practice, we’ll have to be patient for our friends to dig in.
