Refurbished 2015 Macbook Pro, Worth it?

You can replace the SSD on the 2013 to 2015 15" quad core pros. It’s just a screw and easy enough to do

Thanks, I thought you could as well.
Going to go back to looking at 2015 models I think.

I’d get more RAM in that machine before anything else. 4GB is simply not enough for anything but frustration. Once that’s done and your still having problems go into your system preferences and remove any startup items not related to audio. Then restart, hold down shift and put the Mac into safe boot mode. This will repair your file permissions and remove potentially corrupt cache files. After logging in restart as normal and see if that fixes things.

If not, I’d think about wiping the machine and starting again, especially if you have years of non-audio apps clogging up CPU cycles with needless background tasks.

FYI I’m also running Ableton 10 with no issues on a mid 2010 13” MBP running 10.13 with 8GB RAM and an old 7200 rpm HDD so IMO the issue isn’t the age of your computer.
