Reface CP control with an additional controller

The best to everyone!

Reface CP control with an additional controller. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a limitation from Yamaha?

My Reface CP receives what I need from the main keyboard, and everything would be fine if I wasn’t going to change types (sounds) from an external controller. I programmed the LaunchPad, connected it to a small USB-MIDI Host, this to the MERGE Box, switched the Reface to “MIDI Control” and I can change sounds at will. The problem is that I can’t do anything with the effects - the knobs don’t work… Is there any advice to override this? Am I making some kind of mistake? I just want enough to change the type of sound from the EXTERNAL controller, and handle the effects manually directly from CP.
Greetings to all.

First you said you can change the sounds at will but then you can’t change them?

A bit confusing. If i understand correctly you CAN’T change the sounds from a midi controller, right?

Afaik the Reface CP can only recieve note messages via midi, nothing else.

Hello,
I made it more clear in the post (last sentence):
I just want enough to change the type of sound from the EXTERNAL controller, and handle the effects manually directly from CP.

Reface can receive a lot. This is on the MIDI implementation Chart.

Could it be that when in midi control mode on the reface that all the reface controls are disabled (as it’s expecting cc data rather than hands on manipulation). This might be the case if the implementation charts shows the FX can be controlled by midi cc…

if you’ve got access to a computer with midi analyser/monitor software can you see if you’re getting the correct cc’s at the input of the reface by plugging that usb cable into the the computer and monitoring it? Just a thought that the cc data either isn’t getting through the host and hub or that isn’t getting corrupted somehow. Let us know how you get on

As an aside (and not connected to your issue) I remember having issues with the cp when being controlled by an (admittedly) old midi controller keyboard. I just couldn’t get the full velocity range on the cp and at the time I had no way of checking if the velocity being received was getting upto 127. Like I say, different issue to yours. I just couldn’t get the Rhodes sounds to really bark.

You’re right. I didn’t know that.

Thank you for reply. Indeed, that can be a case of Reface (I think Yamaha people can always say “but look at the price”). I’ll try to do more researches after some hours. Anyway I’ve found some temporary solution (not tried yet); my pad controller (LaunchPad Mini) is so flexible to program, and now, more important is to find ergonomic placement in my rig.
BTW, I remember velocity max 120 goin’ out of my Yamaha DX 7 ii. Case like yours. Reminds me old times with Logic on the Atari, SoundDiver and a lot of nice soft.

I’ve checked it with USB, and notes, velocity, all this works normally in both modes. With “MIDI COntrol” off no other data is transmitted or received, with “MIDI Control” ON it receives all it can, and transmits all from its knobs.
There is no way around this, unfortunately, according to “MIDI Impementation”
Thanks and greetings

BTW, I found a temporary, substitute solution.
