Record midi in

I’m sorry to keep spamming with my newbish questions but I’m right on the cusp of getting the octatrack to unlock my imagination perfectly but I’m just hitting some maddening technical hurdles

at the moment? the midi sequencer.

I already posted at length about not being able to get my little phatty to interface perfectly with the octatrack midi sequencer – it seems like some feedback loop happens that keeps things from working right and I can’t pinpoint where it’s happening

but my question right now is: what am I doing wrong to not be able to record midi sequences from live into the octatrack? midi in/out properly into octatrack from laptop/live. I set the midi sequence on live to output on channel 1.

I set the channel to channel 1 on the midi sequencer, hit <rec+play> to trigger the live record mode, push play on ableton (currently midi master) … but nothing gets recorded in the octatrack. I know midi is getting sent because the octatrack starts going

i’m sure I’m missing something obvious. any clues?

Are you recording notes or midi cc?

I’m trying to record notes

ableton live has a midi sequence of notes – there might also be some cc’s, but whatever – and I know it can play because I send it out to a synthesizer and it plays the notes just fine, but into the octatrack, nothin’

I don’t have an OT but from looking at the manual… Do you have the channels set correctly in Project>MIDI>Channels? I think you can set the specific MIDI channels for the 8 MIDI tracks in there, as well as an auto-channel. Maybe your track 1 isn’t set to channel 1 at the moment.

Personally, I just use the auto-channel when sending an existing sequence from Live to MNM or A4. I assume it will work just as well with OT.

in case anyone is curious:
all of my problems seem to have come from the fact that I was patching through a CP-251 an lfo to the filter. it was creating a midi feedback loop. I had totally forgotten that was patched in!

I am still having legions of trouble getting my little phatty and my octatrack to play nice. does anyone live in NYC? I will pay you and give you pizza/beer to come over and show me how to get these working together right. I can’t tell if I have a defective unit or not. I swear to god it’s either something really obvious or something is fucked with the unit.
