I think this is misleading. With Dipole you can have one “shape” per filter core at the same time. If you set your filter 2x LP on one side and 2xLP on other side that is all you get - you don’t have acces to HP or BP unless you change topology of filter and lose 2xLP + 2xLP.
While with QPAS you have less control over peak distribution (both sides spread from central Freq) but have acces to 4 shapes from 4 cores simultaneously.
And this is huge difference once you start patching and I wasn’t aware of it before I actually laid my hands on QPAS.
So again these filters cater different workflows and necessities. That’s like trying to compare minivan with SUV - they both have 4 wheels and can transport people, but their use cases are dissimilar.
I specifically said you can have one shape per filter times 4 filters, how is it misleading?
Yes you have to decide which ones you want to use for each filter, but you can have one for each type set at each filter if you want.
I’m not saying it’s the same and I don’t think what I said is misleading.
Misleading is this part
Or better way to put it, this sentence cancels itself. But I think we have already spent too much time on this debate instead of making music with our filters.
Btw for a roland acidish filter I can recomment the Jove. Sounds not exactly like a 303, but if you feed it with a square wave, you definitly feel some 303 vibes going on
They’re very hard to find though, even second hand. I’ve been looking for one for the best part of a year (if you’re selling?).
System80 have stopped making them and have promised a V2 design but there’s been no news since the summer.
I agree! Enjoy your awesome filter and I’ll enjoy my awesome filter ![]()
hey all,
I have a question for any Bastl Ikarie owners.
I’ve read that the input can be used for line level equipment, also read in the manual it saturates.
I’m just wondering if it’s good enough as an all purpose line in from an Elektron box?
I have Ikarie. It was the first Eurorack filter I bought (I now have several others). I like it, but I would not use it for this purpose. The saturation is achieved by boosting the input signal, but if you are using that headroom to bring a line-level signal to Eurorack level, then you aren’t going to be able to achieve the same effect with what headroom is left to you. Another issue is that the resonance gets wild pretty fast, and the slider, while better than a knob, is still not quite good enough to play unless you mostly want to destroy the input. The subtle range is narrow. If you have other Eurorack that you can use for modulation, it might work, but I would still recommend a separate line-level-boost module before Ikarie. And I think looking at non-Eurorack filters might be preferable (though I have no suggestions apart from Analog Heat; asking in another thread might yield some).
I got an Ikarie as well. And agree on the point that it might be used to boost linelevel you loose one great feature of Ikarie.
Btw its my favorite filter, small, a lot of functions, great own sound, great to operate with it.
As @plragde notes, most Eurorack filters are going to need you to bring line-level signals to eurorack level first.
If you’re not specifically looking for a Eurorack module, and looking for “outboard” filters more generally, in addition to the Analog Heat I can recommend the Vermona Filter Lancet or the Vermona Retroverb Lancet (same as Filter Lancet + spring reverb)
thanks for the replies, I am specifically looking for a eurorack filter.
I’ve read the manual and know it can be used this way - but can see how that would limit it. Especially in the smaller setup I’m going for.
The input gain can be also used to amplify
most line level signals to the optimal operational level for this filter.
From the manual btw, in case any one else stumbles across this.
I’m travelling right now, but if you haven’t decided in a couple of weeks, DM me and I’ll experiment with Ikarie and line-level signals and report back.
thanks @plragde, much appreciated.
that’s ok though, I’ve ordered a small pod and first modules so I’ll be setting it up this/next week. likely see you over in the modular thread.
there’s a 2hp module I’ve found called a Liho which does exactly what I need so will look at getting one of those.
Doepfer Wasp filter
I ordered a Liho recently! But the courier messed up the delivery and returned it to the manufacturer, who will re-ship once I am back home again to receive it.
Oh no hope you get that sorted!
I’m just getting one ordered now, it’s the only 2hp line in and out with a separate headphone adapter I could find, looks absolutely solid for a small setup.
got mine today and just wanted to report it’s incredibly well made!
