Recommendations for external midi controllers

Elektron gearheads, who can help? I need to control my octatrack and digitone via external midi controllers. Any hardware recommendations? Faderfox or usb midi host? Or something else? Thäänks :kissing_heart:

I use a Behringer BCR2000 for my Octa.
Really opened up the OT in a new way for me.
Check out Faderfox UC4 if you like a rather small controller.

Just curious, how do you use the BCR with the OT? What are you controlling?

The Faderfox controllers have a nice feel to them.

Sorry for the late reply. Your question somehow went under the radar^^

I have two presets on my BCR2k, one is set to the auto channel and one preset is for controlling individual tracks on their midi channels.

For individual track control, the colums on the BCR are for tracks 1 to 8, each set to the corresponding midi channel.
I have Track Level on encoder group 1, Panning on encoder group 2 and Amp Volume on Encoder Group 3.
On Encoder Group 4 I use the encoders push function to trigger the samples of the eight tracks.
The eight buttons are for track mutes and solo.

I recently went back to using track level for gain staging, so I have the eight buttons set to toggle amp volume from -64 to 0, so I can mute tracks without cutting off fx tails.

The three encoder rows on the bottom of the BCR are set to FX1 Parameter 2, FX2 Parameter 2 and FX2 Parameter 6.

On tracks with Filter in FX slot 1 and Delay or Dark Reverb in FX slot 2 I can control Filter Width and Delay Feedback and Send Level or Shelving Filter Gain and Mix Level on the reverb.
Not a very useful mapping for all fx types, but there’s also the auto channel preset.

The four buttons at the right are for seq control - sequencer start/stop, seq start/reset and seq stop.

Auto channel preset:
Encoder Group 1 has LFO 1/2/3 Speed, then two unused encoders (LEDs off) as a visual clue, then Retrig and Retrig Time + Amp Volume.

Buttons are for Track Mutes and Solo again.

The three rows of eight encoders on the bottom of the BCR are mapped to LFO Depth and the two FX blocks.

Top row has LFO1/2/3 Depth on the first three, two unused encoders as a visual clue again and then Amp Attack, Hold, Release on the same row.

Next row has two unused encoders, then FX1 Parameters 1/2/3, then FX 2 Parameters 1/2/3.
Bottom row has two unused encoders and then FX1 Parameters 4/5/6 followed by FX2 Parameters 4/5/6.

Thanks for the answers! I took the Faderfox and after playing with it for months I’m really happy with my decision! Before I bought it I was just wondering that nearly no midi controller has a midi output anymore, which is strange actually… So I’d recommend the Faderfox to everyone! Also super easy to program

Any chance you could share the file? I’ve been wanting to use my BCR more recently and it sounds like this would be super helpful.

Always had issues with parameters not being reflected on a midi controller when changing OT parts.
Have you used the “Send All Audio CC request CC61 Value 0” after part change? Be interested to know if the BCF2000 updates its value rings/faders to match. That would make it useful.

Sure, no magic happening there.
I’ll upload it with a text file that explains the setup when I find the time.

CC 61 works. I had it conveniently mapped to one of the four buttons at the right side - Seq Start/Stop/Restart/CC61.

IIRC there is also a way to make the BCR/BCF send CC61 each time you change a preset.
I think you need the Mountain Utilities editor software for that, though.

My BCR is currently disassembled so I can’t test that right now.

After almost 20 years the usb port isn’t working properly anymore. It takes several attempts for the computer to recognize the device, most of the time it just fails, though.
Looks like the hot glue fell off, so hopefully I can fix it.
If not, I’ll just use it with the 5 pin midi ports.

+1 for faderfox
I have the mx12, and those faders just feel so good! I’ve had various midi controllers and these really are the best (for my taste)

Looking forward to trying mine. I got the MX12 and PC12 coming from Juno UK tomorrow.

Agreed, Faderfox controllers are midi controllers with hardware build-quality, which is rare really.

Do you know if the Digitone also responds to cc61? can’t find anything about it…

That feature is only implemented on the Octatrack.

Hi, I just bought an bcr2000 and I’m having some troubles to get feedback when I’m changing patterns on digitakt.
Works fine when you move encoders on digitakt, that infomation goes direct to Bcr and other way around if you move knobs on Bcr but the thing is I want to change from pattern 1 to pattern 2 and get the information of pattern 2 in my Bcr and that’s not happening. I have to move just a little bit the encoders on digitakt to “tell” Bcr: " Het, this is the position now" and Bcr is “Oh!!, okay, Now Im there”.

Please, can you tell me how to set upt this things to acomplish what I want?, Thank you!!!

You ever get this figured out?

Unfortunately only OT has the ability to send all current values to a controller - on DT - and other Elektrons you’d have to briefly move every knob on DT to update the mapped controls on the BCR or move the encoders on the BCR to match the values saved in the DT pattern.

Thank you very much, yes I’m waiting for a new version from DT soft with cc61. They didn’t incorporate it in the last one, so I don’t know if they will some day.
I’m keeping my Bcr just in case.
It would be awsome if the did it, another midi controllers are WAY expensive and I’m from Argentina, it’s not gonna happend, not soon at least.
Please!, for the people from the third world, make it happend, @Elektron! this could open the game to de next level of creativity and happiness for all of us!
