Random pattern generation

Do any of the Elektron boxes have a random pattern generator feature?

The TR-8 series of Roland’s do (which I use). But I’m curious about Elektron.

I guess you could use probability, but that’s not what I’m going for.

Thanks!

really? interesting, didn‘t know that

Not direct but you can use probability with midi tracks and record them with audio tracks with Octatrack, and I guess with Digitakt, Digitone.

With OT midi tracks and AR, I’m pretty sure I can record 12 track random patterns in AR easily.

Or close your eyes, your ears, record trigs with your feet in Live Recording at 300 bpm! :content:

On the TR-8 hold PTN Select and Scatter

On the TR-8S hold PTN Select and SAMPLE

Works great! Some really good patterns to - you have to tweak to taste, but good inspiration for sure!

Use the chicken scratch technique with my Rytm. Works sometimes…

Not direct; but I have random pattern generation on a few boxes.

Or just go into record mode; close your eyes; and tap randomly with body parts and foreign objects.

Octatrack has kind of random by way of slices|randomise locks. For example you can easily lay out your trigs on a track that is assigned a sliced sample, then randomise the slice locks.

What is it? You put grains and chicken play pads? :content:

there were/are some apps that can do that for you. those can probably still be found here on the forum

edit: …but not for all the machines

Euclidean would be great on the DN plz.

I find it quite easy to generate randomness regardless of the groovebox

would be great if you could randomize amount and position of trigs as well

FWIW I’ve used Pure Data to generate Euclidean rhythms on the Digitone and the Digitakt. The code is available on GitHub. Look at the YouTube comments for the link.

This morning with Analog Rytm I generated a random pattern / kit with @guga’s Goliath.

Possible with midi loopback, rdm lfo on linear slices, recordable.

oh I meant trigs not tracks. But I guess still possible… random arp midi loopback?
I never use midi loop. feel uncomfortable with it somehow :upside_down_face:

Possible even without loopback. Linear locks + rdm lfo > resampling if you want it static.

In that case midi loopback let you record rdm slices variations on audio tracks.
It is safe if you use the same midi channel for the audio track and the midi track. In that case the midi track can’t receive midi data, hence no feedback.

I’m on the lookout for a Max patch that generates idm-esque sequences and patterns to the RYTM.

Collider on iPad is great for intelligently randomised patterns… Play around with style selection to find something you like. The ‘1.45’ setting might be useful for you (uses the dual VCO update from a while back for some bleeps bloopy / bassy stuff). Mind you, ‘IDM’ is a bit more Machinedrum territory on the whole…

On DT/DN (maybe others, not sure) you could put in a bunch of trigs all with low probability settings and use the page randomisation feature for changing all the parameters at once. And for moving trigs around on more regular patterns that don’t need wild parameter changes, go into record mode on a few tracks and hit the left and right arrows to move them against each other. Had good results like this.

Hrm, wish there was one with case for sale.

i’m afraid only the version without case is currently available :expressionless:
hopefully the fully assembled one will be back in stock again at some point
