Yeah this fucking sucks. Especially with the online beef that was going on recently.
Those first 4 records (Remission up until Crack The Skye) are absolute classics and Brent was an integral part of that. RIP
This one hits so hard. I was hoping so badly that his exile from Mastodon would allow him to get clean. I was hoping for his redemption, and reunion with Mastodon.
Crack the Skye, Blood Mountain, and Leviathan are the albums that got me into Metal. Huge loss of an amazing artist.
Really shit news. I was just dancing/shouting to Blood & Thunder at the ArcTanGent silent disco last week and here we are.
Remission was a fantastic, raw piece of work. I remember hearing Leviathan for the first time and being blown away. Still one of my favourite albums. Hearts Alive and Joseph Merrick are insanely inventive pieces of music. Blood Mountain was sick as well.
Crack the Skye grew on me. I remember watching the ‘making of’ DVD and being amazed by how Brent used his recovery to create such beautiful intricate compositions.
Wasn’t a huge fan of anything after CtS but Leviathan will stay with me forever.
From speaking with friends, it seems Brent was a troubled guy (like all of us) but was someone who ALWAYS had time for his fans. There are so many cool stories of how he treated fans like friends, helped people out, hung out with them etc. Sounds like a small thing but to me it means a heck of a lot.
So yeah, Brent was one of my all-time guitar heroes and I’m gutted for his loss.
How sad. Such a unique and gifted spirit. He will be missed. On to other realms.
Random (arc) tangent, but I was there too, not in the silent disco mind. I didn’t even think to see if anyone from the forum might be going.
Remission/Leviathan are pretty much top tier albums, incredible work. They lost me more and more after that, but those two will always stand out.
I remember I had a very brief chat with him in 2003 after a show (my first time seeing them) where they played supporting High On Fire on a Sunday afternoon.
They had Thin Lizzy’s Emerald in their set back then, sang by Brent. I remember thinking it would be cool if he sang more clean vocals on their own material as well… Lo and behold when Leviathan came out…
So many good memories listening to those first albums and seeing them play quite a few times…
RIP, total legend. Seen them a bunch of times since 2004, they were always great. Met Brent randomly in a pub around 2006, had a long and cool chat with him about bands old and new.
really sorry to hear that
I just recently grabbed my Leviathan CD to put on my mp3 player a month ago
How rare for a thrash guitarist to have such a unique sound. Can’t think of many others who accomplished it. Tragedy
I don’t listen to a lot of metal, but Leviathan, Blood Mountain, and Crack the Skye are the pinnacle of the genre for me. Huge loss…
Mastodon kept me interested in Metal during a time when I was not listening to Metal at all. Blood Mountain, Crack the Sky are great - but also the more accessible records later are still good. So sad, that he has passed.
