Are there any DAWs or Tools where I can load for example a movie or audio file and quickly export the parts I like to use them in my Elektron samplers? I mean like really quick. I own Ableton but I find the workflow for that particular purpose not very quick. I’d like a faster process and with a que (set in+out -> shortcut -> add to render que) function or something like that. Do you know of any app that works like this?
So, what i’ve found is if I find something on youtube that i like, i find a video to mp3 converter and go that way. I proceed to chop those up in renoise, and it works well because i can make my own sample chains
Hmm… I guess there is a workflow in every DAW or even more NLE (video editing) for this… I remember using a tool with a render cue function to extract scenes off long movies that was pretty quick (as I said … shortcut I for in, shortcut O for out -> shortcut to add to render cue and proceed with next in and out and so on). So I guess I am imagine a workflow without any interruption like playing somewhere and recording somewhere else – this is slow and how would you get the perfect chop – you would always have to trim those clips – in my eyes not a fast workflow if you want to extract lots of clips.
Interesting. I don’t think I’ve ever worked like that, or needed something like that. I usually just hear something I’d like to sample, pause the movie or whatever, and hit record on Audacity, trim and it’s done. But, yeah if you were trying to do a specific thing with multiple parts of the movie, without re-editing…well, if your looking for it, somebody prolly made an app for it.
Hmmm, interesting. So, it’s Windows right? Not compatible with Win10? I might check it if it is.
Edit…Right, your talking about Mac. I’m on Win10, so downloading now. You got me interested.
Well, I have no clue – but I installed a Windows laptop a few days ago and installed MS Office 2007 – so I am pretty confident that it will work since Microsoft doesn’t want to break anything in terms of compatibility since Windows 95 (I really admire Windows users in that regard!)
And then I have 300 chops, export them and have to delete the 294 bad ones? Or is there a workflow for this I can’t think of right now?
I don’t think there is a good workflow in Ableton tbh. I know you can create clips and then freeze the track which will generate WAV files named Freeze Project 0123921931.wav or something. But it’s a few clicks too much. In Adobe Premiere this would be easier.
Maybe I’m missing the point here, but I’d put warp markers where I want my slices, pull them in the timeline, listen and delete all unwanted stuff then export.
Or import the whole thing into the timeline, use short cut ctrl+e to slice (or rather cut the clip, slice is the wrong word here) at cursor, delete unwanted stuff -> export.
Zoom in/out with mousewheel is fast and acurate in Live.
Ok…If you use save and collect all feature, all consolidated clips (Ctrl +J) appear in the project folder (amongst other audio).
I think there’s a folder for all consolidated files.
So CTRL+J to choose which slices go there.
No need to go through the export dialog.
YEP! That works like a charm! Awesome! Thanks a lot!
So my workflow is now like this:
Go to timeline, drag&drop clip wait until it’s analyzed (get a coffee), save the project (!), mark with mouse the passage you want to extract -> press CMD+E (or CTRL+E), drag it one track up, CMD+R (or CTRL+R) to rename it properly to find it afterwards and then finally CMD+J to consolidate which will save it into the project folder in the subfolder Projectname/Samples/Processed/Consolidated/Thisismychop.aif
In Studio One you can drag a bunch of snippets and cuts you make in your timeline into a folder. It even gives the option to render with insert fx. VERY handy.
Having a couple of pro-software tested, I was surprised about Audacity at such a task and it became my go-to tool for cutting slices from long audio files.
Audacity supports to select “regions” of interest, to “label” those “regions” and at the end to batch-export the “labeled” regions only. We can even store the “project”, have a break, and continue later.
