This post to share you the little midi effect chain i just made to reproduce the note repeat feature found in the Push hardware (and mpc).
For those who may not be aware, this is a quantized note repeat with swing settings.
The pressure of the pads (aftertouch) also modulates the velocity of the note repetitions, which gives great musical results for rythmic or melodic content while being fun to use!
I don’t have Push anymore, i don’t really miss it…appart from that feature!
Now i have ableton live 10 with max4live and a midi keyboard with aftertouch.
So I’ve simply setup lives midi arpegiator, which can swing and stay quantized to the clock.
After this device i put a midi velocity utility set to default.
“Expression control” is a max4live device that easilly lets me assign keyboard aftertouch to the velocity (“out low” parameter in the velocity utility)
Done!
If you have live with max4live, I urge you to try this at home!
Go to feature for hi hats, great for basslines etc…
Just added a midi arpeggiator device per note inside a midi effect rack, allowing to have a note repeat rate per note (usefull for rythms)
Here is the effect chain, could be great to add macros to the rack! NOTE REPEAT.adg (33.8 KB)
Insert before a plugin triggered by midi notes.
When you hit a note the autoselect feature shows you the corresponding chain, you can then define the arp setting, hit another note and so on….
Great great fun to use on whole drum kits !!!
Now i wish i had a controller with polyphonic aftertouch
For anyone else using this, I made a couple adjustments to make it work better for me.
Added a slight rise and fall time (20ms) on aftertouch in Expression Control. For me it was very jerky without that and some notes dropped out. May be bc of my controller.
And I applied aftertouch to the Velocity high as well as the low. Because I found if I hit my initial note at high velocity, decreasing pressure would have no effect, since the arp keeps putting out that initial velocity.
You just made my APC64 perform like my DSI Tempest! Thank you so much!
EDIT: The only think that’s strange is that aftertouch doesn’t work with Ableton’s drums pals, at least on Ableton Live 11 Lite. 3rd-party AU’s work as expected, so I’m not sure why Live’s drums have this limitation.
