Push 3 Users Thread

Correction, I’m just an idiot. Realised the beta version I’m on is 1.3.1b5 … the new version of Live is 1.3.2. Installed the non-beta version and everything now works as it should: Push flips into controller mode; I can access push from Standalone in Live, etc.

It still doesn’t show as requiring any current in the MacOS System Information USB3.1 view but doesn’t show as running off battery in the settings menu, so seems to be working

I’m really starting to dig it, and as I said previously, working standalone with the Push 3 is forcing me to discover a lot of things that I never knew I could do with the Push 2 previously. I’m really digging the p-locking equivalent on the Push 3 at the moment, and just how it’s starting to have a smoother flow than my previous experiences.

I also still have a lot of questions and some manual referencing.

I don’t think my knowledge/experience of Elektron machines is related/translated to the P3, they’re different and unique enough where they feel symbiotic… whereas if I was still planning to use the Akai Force it would be a PITA.
The option of recording extended Elektron performances into the Push 3, then chop and edit them later, is great too… I personally view the Push 3 (and MPC) as centrepiece devices and Elektron units as instruments/voices/sound sources.

Is there no way to edit Master scene parameters/settings at the moment in standalone? (Tempo per scene, follow actions, etc.)

ive found if the button click isnt being great, pressing select and touching the volume control works a treat to move through the options.

Anyone know how to get standalone to follow the octatrack clock?

Push arrived (controller version). Still working but did a quick run. Initial impressions:

  • All buttons and encoders are of high quality. Nothing lose, sticking out, no issues with response etc
  • Pad quality is better than Push 2. These have a very silky feeling to them, and they have the right level of response. I prefer them for aftertouch actions versus Push 2 which required a little more harder of a press.
  • MPE functionality works as expected. Haven’t encountered any issues so far.
  • USB power is also not working off my M1 MBP 14. Need to have the power adapter attached, so you can throw me into the same bag as @G0n35y

The USB Power Thing is sad to hear. That was exactly what I was planing to do.

Figured I would check out the new tutorial section on the device itself for the heck of it since a lot of folks here are discussing getting into this device as their first Ableton experience. If I were to come at it from the perspective of a new user, I don’t think there is anything to praise. I guess it will be expanded in the future, but right now with 3 “tutorials” I’m honestly surprised a dedicated button even exists for it.

Nothing interactive at all about it. More like a demo :-1:
It looks like it also has potential for bugs. Doing the drum tutorial for example, I already had a song playing, and I was in session view on the device. When the tutorial loaded, there was no way to stop what was playing, and the point of the demo was to play pads in Note mode. Except you can’t switch to Note mode if you load the tutorial in Session mode

there are bugs for sure, ive had complete reboots, loss of any midi sync, pads stop responding (switch layout and they work again), the m4l drone sometimes is silent and cant be started, it needs a good update but i do love it.

Yup. Just experienced this.

Some really weird USB connection issues. Using the supplied cable, it seems it only wants to work in one direction:

that is weird. I used a longer cable i already had, its one that works with usb c displays, also on a windows machine. Oh one good bug I found, hooking up a push 2 to the 3 in standalone mode caused an instant reboot, but so did changing midi sync settings while it was playing. Ive seen the ableton is displaying an important message pop up a few times aswell. I love it but i am a little disappointed with standalone, midi keeps dropping out and needing a reboot to restore, its not easy to set up with external gear, the usual icons or menu items youd use dont exist. An hdmi or display capable usb c socket would make it amazing

At least your cable works in one of the directions! Mine draws a blank both ways.

I’ll be sure to let folks know if I get a solution/answer from Ableton this week.

Doesnt that defeat the object of being standalone

yeah I guess it would. But also no because it wouldnt need a laptop or pc to run. I cant get standalone to sync with an external midi clock, i need that little ext button from the regular ui.

I seem to recall a post where someone posted a link detailing which of the standard Max4Live devices do/don’t work on the Push 3 at this time. For example, the Expression Control device doesn’t currently display properly so can’t be setup from Standalone mode.

Does this exist?

I think this is what you’re after?: https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/8506527153308-Push-standalone-Max-for-Live-Device-Compatibility

That’s it. Thank you! Adding this to the FAQ above.

Amazing that worked!!

So my volume encoder definitely seems to be broken for pushing in. Select and tapping the encoder takes me through all the outputs though. Fine workaround for now!

Thats great to hear, mines the same with clicking, it just goes round main & cue. I havent used my push 2 in ages so just tried random combo;s  Hopefully they will be quick with some fixes
