I’m feeling a bit naked not having plugins or even my go-to samples available, but being able to play while laying in bed, hanging with the sleepy cats is just crazy fun and just endless. Yeah it’s Live, but to do this without a computer is just insane.
Has anyone figured out how to manage Collections/Favourites on/for Push standalone? All I seem to be able to do is tag presets with the Red/Favourites category, can’t find any other way to handle them so far.
I’ve seen reports of people using supported controllers with Live integration without having to do any setup, e.g. the APC40 Mk2. Has anyone installed a remote script for a controller that isn’t on the default list for Live? I’d like to set up my Faderfox UC4 which - on Mac or PC - normally requires the script to be manually installed.
Does anyone have any favourite M4L devices or Packs that work well with Standalone?
Unfortunately not! If it’s an option to rename them on Standalone (and it really should be) I’m assuming this has to be done from the computer. I’ll probably give that a try tomorrow.
*Edit: Just tried connecting to Live and that’s not an option (yet, at least).
Finally got my P3 controller version on Fri and happy to report that I haven’t experienced any of the common issues so far. The jog wheel works great and is satisfying to use. No noise when using the headphone out. Buttons aren’t sticky. MPE pads are incredible.
Never had a P2 so I’m learning little by little. The workflow is excellent. I’m already feeling as fast as I did on the MPC X. A few more days of practice and it’ll be no contest.
My only gripe is with Ableton itself. I’ve been using Bitwig since I got it on sale months ago, so it’s been rough coming back. It feels so clunky and dated in comparison. Already had two major freezes where I had to force quit Ableton.
I had somewhat of a poor man’s P3 set up with Bitwig and the Joue Pro midi controllers. I actually enjoyed that combo quite a bit, but the real P3 takes it to a whole other level. Also feels amazing knowing I can eventually convert it to standalone. I’m stoked for the future of this beast.
When using the External Instrument device, do your pads light up when you play? Because I can’t seem to send MIDI (even with MIDI track enabled for in an out) and my pads don’t light up sooo I don’t know if it’s the MIDI that doesn’t work or the pads for External Instrument.
just gave this a try, they do light up. Make sure you have the push selected as an input for the track. There is a bug which stops the pads working, i think going through the layouts will bring them back to life. Midi is super flaky for me, if you change midi settings while playing it stops playing nicely.
Copy paste the remote script you want to install in “midi remote script” or “template support files” ( I can’t remember the name) folder that should be in the Ableton resource folder, or something similar.
I created a folder called “Remote Scripts” in the User Library on Push standalone, similar to the way I’ve done it on desktop. I copied over my Faderfox Live 11 Script folder “Faderfox_Universal_2” into it. It’s unfortunately still not working, even after a restart. In Live on desktop, I’d normally assign the correct input and output ports (“Faderfox UC4 Midi 1”) in the MIDI/Link remote script settings, but there is no obvious way to do this on standalone. Am I missing something?
I doubt it. I think it was a collaboration and Akai has their own ecosystem now. It’s been a very long time since the Mk2 (2014, almost 10 years). Most controllers come with a lot of those features standard now; and it’s even less likely since Ableton has moved everything in-house so you have to go through Ableton to get their branded stuff.
I’ve been monitoring this thread here and there but my experience with my standalone Push 3 so far has been great. The MPE pads are so much fun with hardware synthesizers - I’m finding patches that have controls preset to it and it’s a wonderful/fun surprise to find them without looking, just applying some aftertouch or pressure while holding notes.
Something I hope comes along in the future would be the ability to drag folders from Places in Ableton Live on my desktop directly to the Push (or connect an SSD to the USB-C or USB host port). I really, really want access to the sample library I’ve been curating for myself since 2000. I haven’t RTFM to see if I’m missing a function but drag and drop from the DAW didn’t work so I doubt it’s a thing (yet). It was fun when I had the MPC Live II to have all of my samples on a massive SSD.
I do find the unit a bit too big/heavy to just have on my lap in bed. It also gets warm (not hot) when doing CPU intense tasks, so not entirely comfortable lying across legs on the couch, but I am a bit of a complainy wuss
I borrow the collapsible tray table from the love of my life… I’ll likely need to get my own. She uses it for her laptop, but I found it works great for Push 3.
It is very flexible, I own quite a few LOCI stands since they are:
Interconnectable similar to Lego
Extremely space-saving to transport when disassembled
Super lightweigt but stable, made of precision laser cut 6 mm oak veneer
I can carry the Push+stand combo around the house like this w/o being tethered using the power bank and the TMA-2 Studio Wireless+ headphones. The wholes in the side can be grabbed like handles.
I love this setup with the Push 3 standalone. It’s fucking amazing.
