I’m using this device (works on standalone). You can place it anywhere you like in the set, it’s an audio effect. I’d suggest putting it on a dummy track because for it to work across multiple tracks you need multiple instances of the effect (ie stacked parallel chains in an audio effect)
Here’s how I’ve got it set up:
- Audio effect rack with 8 chains, each chain has an instance of the device (the name is too long so I’ll just call it the device)
- The device needs to be mapped to an audio effect rack with a variation, you do this by clicking ‘map’ and then clicking the on/off button of the rack you want to map
- Each of these racks has an Auto Filter set to DJ mode and two Shaper devices which are mapped to sends A and B. I’ve set the Shapers to manual mode and drawn in a straight line from 0-100%. Essentially they function as a connection between the send knobs and the macro knobs of the audio effect rack.
- Each audio effect rack therefore has three macros - Auto Filter bidirectional HP/LP (where the center value is neutral), then the two Shapers (which are then mapped to the sends)
- Effect rack has a single variation which is all three knobs set to default values (middle, zero, zero)
- When you map the device to the rack it detects how many variations it has, these are buttons that can be mapped.
- I’ve then enabled macros for the rack that has all the devices stacked in 8 parallel chains, so that I can map the 8 default variation triggers to the same macro knob
- LCXL3 Note On momentary button is MIDI mapped to the macro, so pressing the button turns the knob from 0 to 127 immediately, which then activates all 8 variation launch buttons at the same time
All of this nonsense because Ableton won’t let you map a single MIDI message to multiple variations. I can take some screenshots tomorrow which will probably explain it better, I’ll edit the post to add them. It’s not as complex as I’ve probably made it sound, but I think you can achieve the same thing with Iftah’s Variations device (per my post to @shellfritsch
)
Edit: this was not in general terms, I’m sorry
